Hi all,
Thought I would pop over to this forum for some friendly advice. Next month I am going to be in Istanbul for three days and although I was able to find some info on how to dress in other threads I was after some specifics. I am quite tall for a female (5'9), blonde, pale skinned and blue eyed so I am guessing there is no way I am going to pass unnoticed, I am not fat but I am curvy. None of my clothing is indecent or provocative but I am likely to only have shorts and tank tops with me, is this crazy talk? Will I be harrassed beyond belief or if I am in the touristy areas will I likely be ok? Any advice greatly appreciated,

PT

Not crazy, no. Tanks and short shorts will turn some heads anywhere here and you're likely to be asked many times to buy a carpet!

In Istanbul, try to give yourself some elbow space and don't go into extremely crowded areas. Someone will try to cop a feel.

Many girls in Turkey wear tight clothes but don't actually show much skin.

You shouldn't have much trouble in touristy areas.

Most of the fellas are gents, especially the older guys ... and not all comments are derogatory .. it's not unusual for Turks to comment on something they like ... you might find it amusing to see if you can hear what they're saying ...

... things that shorts and tank tops might elicit from enthusiastic males young and old:

Yavrum - generally nothing rude - similar to 'baby' ... in both it's innocent and less innocent use ...

Fistik - (peanut) a compliment on the female form ...

Mashallah - general approval but the tone is important ... if said with drool then it may indicate excessive approval ...

Exploding eyes and a gaping mouth with an uninterrupted line of saliva to the pavement - generally indicates it's time to be moving on ...

Oh I get that one all the time... Laughing Laughing Laughing

Thanks for your help, I am feeling much better about my proposed wardrobe, really didn't want to have to carry extra clothes just for 3 days and don't actually have all that much that would suffice anyway! I was originally thinking that if it was a problem I could always pick up a pair of trousers once I arrived, and then I read all the threads about how impossible it is to buy them... Razz

Stop all this mick taking unless you want a picture of Thrifty wearing only a pair of bikini briefs hunched over his computer with massive beer gut spilling out over the keyboard. I could even get Henry Cowell to help me make that picture into my avatar.

In the event of it happening, the ladies should laminate their keyboards .. or fix a drool bag to their chins ...

My second day in Turkey I was walking down the street to the market and it was hot like hell so I had on jeans and a sleeveless shirt, and a little old lady in a head scarf came up to me, waggled her finger in my face, and said, "tut tut tut!" Never made THAT mistake again!!!! Embarassed

Were you walking down to the:

a. supermarket/grocer's/corner shop?
b. market-in that case you mean a street market such as salıpazarı?

I think that you have been reduced to calling your grocer's a "market."

Get 8 years of marriage and more than 12 years of TEFLing behind you and we'll see how you look.

I didn't get where I am today by eating muesli and drinking green tea.

Those are not bikini briefs-those are Y-Fronts-typical Turkish man ones.
