Today I purchased some standard discount tickets from Nanba to Nagoya (a world of excitement awaits) and I was now just wondering how on earth it works. The tickets are paper based so do I need to take them to a magic window to get a real ticket or what?

Any help would be appreciated.

no, but you can only sit in an unreserved seat, if you take the shinkansen.

It's not shinkansen, just Kintetsu.

Yeah, what he said. But honestly, whenever I buy discount train tickets, I just take them to the JR ticket counter and trade them in for assigned seats. It's super-easy to do, takes little time, and there's no extra charge. You can do that almost any time, even right up to your departure -- providing there are reserved seats still available.

If it's a popular/busy run, it may be worth your while to do that, as it tends to limit how much time you spend sitting next to some sweaty, unbathed comic book nerd.

If you don't want to go through that trouble, just use your discount ticket like any other ticket (put it through the machine to get past the turnstile) and grab an unreserved seat (and hope an Eigo-bandit doesn't choose to sit next to you).

then I think it depends on what train you take to Nagoya.
Kintetsu has different kinds of trains.
