I honestly believe that they've simply never thought about why a foreigner would want to be friends with them.
It's probably because their only previous experience is going into Nova and renting one once a week. |

Good point, Mark. But, I think many of them have thought about it; it's just that they don't believe that a foreigner would want to become friends with them. After all, in Japan Japanese people are a dime a dozen, right? They probably feel that a foreigner could make friends with any Japanese person he or she wishes to. Why bother with just an average eikaiwa student? I wonder how many foreign teachers ever consider what their students do away from the eikaiwa school or even consider their feelings at all. |

Eh? I think we're talking about different things. I was responding to the post about "English leeches". I wasn't talking about all eikaiwa students. |

| Maybe I'm just being optimistic about the quality of the experience I'm about to have (starting with ECC in September), but I'm wondering if it is different when you teach younger kids? Do they 'get it' more than the adults who sound like they are learning just for the hell of it? |

Yes, you will find kids more rewarding that way, assuming you bring with you a heavy dose of patience. |

Exactly, hence why I am usually a cat person. Cats only put up with you, if it's convenient for them.
Some of my students I have met are very interesting, but they don't want to be friends with us because they look down on what we do (fancy that)! I wish teaching was as easy as some people think it is, than I wouldn't feel so tired after I teach 4 classes in a day, go home, correct homework, and prepare an exam. Oh, wait, edutainment hasn't hit the good unis yet! |
