Location makes a big difference, but if you choose an apartment near the main downtown areas (Xu Jia Hui, People's Square, Jing An Si) you can get a nice two-bedroom with living room for around 4000RMB a month. Split that, about 2000RMB each. Pudong is more expensive, if you choose to live near the business areas.
Move away from the subway lines, and especially beyond nei huan xian (inner ring road), and the price drops considerably. Most new houses are being built between the two ring roads, and this is the ideal place to buy if considering to stay for a long time in Shanghai. The Gubei area, in particular, is very decent. The new subway line is almost done, and real estate prices will increase once that is up and running.
