****SPOILER****
Ghana won. United States looked really bad but there was a piss poor penalty call that led to a successfull penalty kick.
Anyway, I'm in America so we just finished watching it an hour ago. |

For all those that claimed AUstralia were nothing, for all those that claimed `Australia is one of those teams we dont have to worry about` (I am talking about YOU Bruce Arena), for all those who claimed we were making up the numbers, I salute you haha.
I think Australia has really stepped up and been taken notice of. I do not claim to say we are a force in the football world but I think we have earned a lot of respect, and things can only get better.
To quote the song for the Socceroos, `I wanna jump and scream in a stadium, full of Australians!` |

Big up Australia! I'm pleased to see our Ashes rivals through. I hope they can take down those mulleted posers from Italy in the next round.
Bye bye USA. Ha ha.
Unlucky Japan. I got up to cheer that one on, was gutted when a number of poor defensive errors cost them a real good chance after that first goal.
And a question. What is it with Brazilians and no first names? Is Ronaldo simply that, or is his first name Stanley? Who decides whether a player can have a first name or not?
Personally I think its all a bit lame, and creates a bit of a airy fairy myth around these apparent superstars. Yeah, ok, some of them are good, but I reckon Ronaldo is an over-hyped, buck-toothed carthorse, and I look forward to seeing him brought down to earth by a dominant Ghana side in the next round. 4-0 Ghana is my prediction.
Its no wonder Japan lost their way. They thought they were playing against a bunch of cartoon characters. Playing against Martin Ronaldinho, Stanley Ronaldo and Ernest Robinho they might have been a bit less starry eyed.

And before anyone beats me to it, if Ronaldo hits a hat trick in the semi to knock England out, I will happily print out this thread and eat my own words, then post a picture of me doing it.
So there. |

Although I am sad that Japan is gone, I am glad that Australia is going on. But, personally, I think they could've done better because they won only because of a Japanese meltdown. |

Sadly they can't internationally
Due to licensing issues, the BBC streams are for UK residents only. |

Was'nt anyobody else pissed about NHK giving live updates of the other game while watching the one they had scheduled first? I mean really what kind of idiocy is that? They even had the second game scheduled to come on immediatly following the first! It really ruined what could have been an exciting night of soccer viewing. I hope they string up whichever programming manager/director/whatever was involved is such stupid call. |

They abreviate Brazilian players names for the sake of simplicity and for the commentators benefits I think too!
Without the single names, this would have been the team playing against Japan:
Nelson de Jesus Silva (Dida)
Lucimar da Silva Ferreira (Lucio)
Juan Silveira dos Santos (Juan)
Ccero Joo de Czare (Cicinho)
Gilberto da Silva Melo (Gilberto)
Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite (Kaka)
Ronaldo de Assis Moreira (Ronaldinho)
Gilberto Aparecido da Silva (Gilberto Silva)
Antnio Augusto Ribeiro Reis Junior (Juninho)
Ronaldo Lus Nazrio de Lima (Ronaldo)
And substitutes:
Rogrio Mcke Ceni (Rogerio)
Jos Roberto da Silva Jnior (Ze Roberto)
Ricardo Luiz Pozzi Rodrigues (Ricardinho)
Subs not used:
Adriano Leite Ribeiro (Adriano)
Marcos Evangelista de Moraes (Cafu)
Roberto Carlos da Silva (Roberto Carlos)
Cristiano Marques Gomez (Cris)
Emerson Ferreira da Rosa (Emerson)
Frederico Chaves Guedes (Fred)
Jlio Csar Soares de Espndola (Julio Cesar)
Anderson Luis da Silva (Luisao)
Carlos Luciano da Silva (Mineiro)
I will stick to Ronaldo etc I think! |

Someone has to want their players first!! I cant think of a single Japanese player who would make a big impact in a top league. Nakata is still their best player and he has been a professional substitute for about 5 years. |
