I am 29 years old, Indonesian, registered Architect now living and working in Guangzhou China for already almost 3 years. I am looking for a job in the same field in Hongkong, and so far some of the Design consultant in Hongkong they only recruit person who has a valid working permit for Hongkong area. They ask me this first, and it seems (for me) very difficult for them to be my sponsor in order to get a working permit. But how to get a working permit without any company who will be my sponsor? A working permit will be issued after a company hire me, not a company will hire me after I get a working permit, I guess? Is it possible for me to get the working permit in Hongkong? Because I am desperate to find a job there.
thank you,
someone in guangzhou

I've worked as an architect in Hong Kong, so know a bit about the employment scene in this field.
The trouble is that Hong Kong architect offices are already quite saturated with skilled workers. It's difficult for a foreigner to get in and get sponsorship unless you have a lot of specialist experience. In any case, most HK architectural firms have all their contracts in China. You're already in China, so you may be working on very similar projects that you would get to work on in HK! I, likewise, was asked to work in the HK firms' China office and get a Chinese salary if I was to be continued to be sponsored. They already had more skilled workers than me in their HK headquarters.
Check the relevant classifieds section of www.scmp.com There are sometimes opportunities for foreign architects in there. |
