Hi Cleo,
I heard your call!!! I, as you know, take taxis all the time in Riyadh. How else are we going to get around since we can't drive! We would all starve to death for not being able to get to the market, and you sure in the h*** can't walk.
As someone on this site mentioned, the muttawa have cooled it and have gone back to Qassim. Maybe that is where Prodigy was living, then what he was saying might make sense.
Unless you are obviously a Muslim male with a beard, thoab, etc... no one is going to hassle you during prayer time. But all the shops and restaurants closing is a headache! Women are never questioned about their prayer.
I think that after the initial shock of being here, most of us western women find our niche here and find Saudi more than managable. |

dear people,
Thank you for the replies and info.
reading the replies gives me the feeling that all is not as bad as I thought, and it sounds interesting.
the atmosphere of the discussion seems a little tens, but maybe because I deal here with teachers.
I myself, to be honest, am not a teacher as in schools or other.
I'm an engineer that sets up factories for CD production, but in a way I'm also a teacher as I learn the people how to run the factory and how to make good quality production.
At the moment I'm busy arranging my and my wifes visa to visit Jeddah, and if all goes well, I will arrive in the end of next week....
maybe see you later...

If you are going to Jeddah check out the ITALIAN CLUB. Just off Hail Street at the Balad (ie downtown) end.
An oasis of liberalism in a stange environment. But then if you are a Muslim, maybe your wife lives behind a veil ? If she is, then she will not be permitted to enter these premises ! |

A casual pruning from a foisonous crop:-
"Neccessary" Sic. (Please note, italics for a foreign word-Latin for "thus", of course, my fellow sister pedant: for herein to my base disparagement am I made like unto you, a howling Holofernes).
Where is more dishonour, in the above outrage, or in the mistaking of a consonant in the midst of the name of that Norwegian collaborator, who so reminds me of certain bands of traitorous runagates hereabouts?
Please define "big word". Does that refer to the number of syllables or letters? Or is it since my diction were not countenanced in the shibboleths of perfidious political correctness?
Lo, thou hast thy death wound in this asp! If not your "scot" pretender will avail his feeble pecking poll and blunten mallet wit in customary hind-like service. |
