the CELTA is a four week course that includes wrtten assignments and 6 hours of observed teaching, as well as all the methodological and theoretical input sessions. the CELTA is one of two reputable and widely accepted initial bits of paper. with a CELTA you are a qualified teacher of EFL.
the TKT is the Teacher Knowledge Test. It's a shorter (2 week?) course that introduces people to the basic ideas and issues of methodology and language acquisition theory. it's designed mostly for non-native speakers with sufficient english proficiency (normally about PET level). it ONLY proves you have a knowledge of teaching. as there is NO teaching practice or feedback it does NOT show you are a good teacher, whereas the CELTA at least shows that you've been in a classroom and smelt the chalk.
the CELTA is by far and a way the better ticket to get, especially if you think you'll be in the business a while, or you are already a "propa" teacher. BUT it's quite expensive to get one. the TKT shows a basic knowledge, and is probably far less widely accepted, BUT it's shorter and cheaper.
you pays your money and you takes your choice...literally! |

CELTA.
look at job postings to see why. TKT? never heard of it and I doubt many employers have either. CELTA is a recognised qualifaction that doesn't need explaining to potential employers! |
