I had a similar impression from only a few hours visit. Seems
that it's only redeeming value is as a cheap place for Beijingers
to hold weddings. Apparently the cost of living is so much lower
that it pays to bus the entire wedding party to Tianjin for cheap
grub.
Also the taxi fare started at 5RMB, which is a good indicator of
cost of living from what I've seen (I've lived in places with
6, 7, and 8 RMB taxis and found that the taxi fare parallels
other costs). |

Dalian is fairly clean for a medium sized Chinese city.
(And Beijing actually had clean air for a few days last
week, so anything is possible.)
Perhaps someone can check China Daily for you and give
their pollution index for major cities. I don't have a copy
nearby, but seem to recall that Hainan (Haikou?) had the
cleanest air. It's an island in the south. Not sure if they
have many teaching jobs, but the environment sounds
nice.
Other than that pollution index in China Daily, I am not
sure how you could find accurate info on air quality.
I seem to recall that Lhasa also had fairly clean air,
though not as clean as Hainan. But it may be a bit
in the "middle of nowhere" for you. |

Yes, I can see that the Chinese have put the right thoughts into your brain! China Daily as your preferred source of information, and Hainan as one of China's "cleanest" areas. I would not include Haikou in the top list of clean cities, but the island per se is certainly cleaner than any other province.
Lhasa is in China? Ah yes, CHINA DAILY again! They did claim some 5 years or so ago that "Tibet has China's cleanest air". The reason may be that there are so few chinese in TIbet as yet...
Perhaps, until Tibet is really swamped with hundreds of millions of Chinese, this cleanliness will stay. It also means that foreign nationals won't get a job there because - there are too many Tibetans around (that coujld pollute your mind). |

are you looking for job or adventures? *grin* clarify yourself cause it makes a huge difference in recommending you a place  ) anyways, try LAOS ) or Nepal. In china you wouldnt find MUCH of adventures, but in those two = plenty heh |

Well, you are certainly reading a lot into my attempt to answer a
simple question using a readily available resource.
If you have a better and more reliable source of info on
pollution in China, please post it.
The only source I have seen is in China Daily, and like it or
not, it is a resource which seems to match my experiences
in several Chinese cities, so I mentioned it.
I did not recommend China Daily as a source of unbiased
information on politics in China. I would hope that most
ESL teachers can recognize the difference.
Would you disregard their weather reports simply because
you disagree with their politics? I wouldn't. But I guess
the "politically correct" thought police haven't put it in my
brain that everything they say must be wrong simply
because their politics are obviously biased.
As for Hainan and pollution, it makes sense to me that air
pollution would be relatively low on an island, just as Dalian's
location on the tip of a peninsula helps its situation.
However, I haven't been to Haikou which is why I use those
outside sources such as China Daily.
If you have been to Hainan and can attest that it is, indeed,
much more polluted than, say, Beijing, and that China Daily's
pollution index is completely wrong or politicized to make
some cities look better or worse, please let us know.
From what I could tell of the 5 major cities I have lived in
which they rated, the ratings in China Daily seemed fairly
accurate and better than nothing (or better than just asking
a bunch of ESL teachers how the pollution is where they are). |

I would recommend Vietnam. You do not have to sign a contract, you get paid $10 - $15 U.S. per hour depending on your experience or whatever. You do not get reimbursed your air fare or any accommodation, but you can live in a good Hotel or Boarding house for $9 U.S. per night. You could easily (or I could anyway) work 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. each day Monday to Friday and live very well. I hope to go back there during the next year or so. |

try harbin. if you have hourly paid job, you can get 150-200 RMB per hour  it's pretty cold though. i left just cause the climate didnt suit me at all and i was suffering from severe allergy in summer *smile* |
