to be honest, the current interview system sounds a lot more practical and interesting than the old one.
some more pros and cons of working for nova now as opposed to nova years ago:
+ the textbooks have vastly improved and are designed around the latest research on language aquisition. there are lesson management plans, but you will be encouraged to deviate from them and adapt your own lessons as soon as possible.
- because the company is in financial trouble, they are cutting down on training time. this means that you'll get far less follow up training than you should be getting. |
I am aware of both of these things that you mentioned. To be quite honest, I feel a lot more at ease about having one week training sessions as opposed to three days, but hey, one has to adapt and I'm willing to do so if I have to. |

Jazz you will learn more when you get here, but the three days of five days doesnt really add up to very much. By comparison a CELTA qualification takes 120 hours and has 15 hours of practicum.
The NOVA or GEOS training will simply teach you how to use the textbooks and plan a lesson without making an idiot of yourself. Most of the training is OTJ and you are thrown in the deep end. You learn by doing.
I can suggest some books you can read before you come here which will give you a basic into on language teaching, but what GEOS teaches you is useless outside the company. |

Well for now, the CELTA isn't high on my list of priorities (might change down the road). As someone once said, I'd like to have a taste of teaching without taking a whole bite. Re. NOVA & GEOS, I figured most of my learning is otj (most jobs are that way ) Hopefully, I won't make TOO much of an idiot out of myself...lol! Thanks for the potential book suggestion. Let me get accepted first and I might follow up with you on that. |

Well, I suppose they have desired to hire me. We have been communicating via email, and they told me I'm on to the next step in the hiring process. This involves paying $55 for their background check people to look into my history. |

Excuse me. Do I understand this correctly? Nova are now asking potential employees to pay for for Nova's pre-contract hiring procedures.
Duck and cover boys! Nova's going under! |

I was recently interviewed in the UK and much of it was the same as the original post but not all.
1. We were not required to do activity one.
2. We had to participate in a mock children's lesson.
3. We did not do activity three but we were shown a demo lesson with the group as students. You need to pay attention so you get it right in the interview. You don't need to be inventive in the role play in interview- just repeat what the interviewer showed you in the demo lesson.
I was accepted.
Be aware that the undergraduate recruitment day is very different as it does not involve a personal interview and has many more group activites. Elements of the interview are included as written exercises.
It might take longer than 10 working days to find out the results! |
