well i suppose the canadians who have decided to live here are different from the tourists who only visit for a short time.
When people ask me if i am a patriotic canadian i always say no and that patriotism starts wars. then they ask what i would do if canada was attacked and was forced to go to war, so i say that i would move to which ever side i though would win

If Canada was attacked and was forced to go to war, I'd probably go hang out in Cappadocia.

In which universe are tourists the same as the folks who settle down somewhere? Shall I assume all British and German women living in Turkey are all busy shagging Bodrum barboys? Or that all of the foreign men are hanging out in bars watching football and drinking a helluva lot of Efes, trying to pick up turkish girls? (...oh, no, wait...)

That comment about Canadians being nice was the stupidest thing I've heard in a long time. We are a cruel and nasty nation and we'll bite you in the bum when you least expect it.

Happy holidays!

Yeah , me too. Canadians are useful for such things.

Do you really think we are too nice? I always thought Canadians were just a bit aloof with a simmering layer of tension just underneath.

I think its derivative of British "properness" we have our own sense of properness but its not quite so formal. it sort of becomes a not very assertive way of saying that some things are "just not acceptable in good company" everything seems watered down in canada. nothing really bad about the country and nothing really great. canada has achieved the happy medium and once you give in to happiness the you must forgo exhilaration.

It must be, for you to come to that conclusion and to shun all canadians forever. After nearly 20 years in rural BC, I have no such neuroses. Other neuroses, to be sure, but not those. Maybe it's that whole repressed Tranna The Good Syndrome. Try tokeep your mind open- just because we come from the same country doesn't mean we're all simpering wussy arses afraid to say anything interesting. Me 'n Tekirdag'll give y'all good thumping.

Canadians are no ``nicer`` than nationals of other countries (France, Germany, U.S.A. etc...). It is just that in Canada, people there (in Canada) grow up with a sense of ``political correctness`` which is imparted to them from their caregivers (especially teachers) from an early age - ``be nice to your neighbors, respect people of different religions, races etc.....`` this type of thing makes Canadians very mindful not to be outwardly aggressive or obnoxious. But this does not make Canadians nicer than others.....it is more of a social convention, but does not come from the heart (being nice, that is...).

Ghost has always had the feeling that living in Canada is somewhat similar to living in an airport or railway station.....a lot of close proximity with strangers of different races, religions etc....but no real contact with those people, or desire, for that matter.

Ghost has also found that Canada is the only place in the world where you can have neighbors that you do not know on a personal level...everyone keeps their distance.

In summation, Canadians are no nicer than others, but the conventions and social mores ``force`` Canadians to appear nice, but a revelation of Canadians` inner feelings would probably reveal a different, darker picture of their intrinsic natures.

Ghost
