my school paid me a full months salary for october 05 when i only worked half a month
BUT
they clawed much of that back today by not wanting to pay me the full benefits at end of contract and by not paying the RMB2200 holiday pay bonus

1. I was paid for January and February 2006 even though I was on vacation.
2. My wife has been staying with me and the college never made any fuss about her using the water, electricity, and natural gas.
3. The principal invited all the FT's to dinner last night to thank everyone for our 'hard work and dedication', and to say thanks to the three who are leaving (I being one). The FT's who are leaving each got two very nice leather-framed plaques with Chinese and Mongolian calligraphy. |

I take part in my old school's annual new year's eve running race - 2.5km around the school, with a 700RMB first prize and 2 bottles of olive oil for every participant. I came 7th last year (out of about 60), even after walking part of the way because I couldn't really be arsed (and was hungover). My fellow FT came first, however, and they refused to give him the cash because he was a foreigner. They eventually gave him half, I think, which was a Really Nice Thing.
I plan to actually train this year and win the thing. I look forward to not getting the money because I no longer teach there. But I just want to win. |

| My school sponsored me for a Z visa (and largely paid for it) for the next year even though I wouldn't be working with them. |

| Just out of curiosity, Teababy, what would any Chinese do with olive oil? Popeye used to know the answer to that, but Xiao Wang?? |

I'm not sure, but it's a knock-off of an Italian brand, so I'm sure they just mount it on a shelf somewhere to look at.
I make chips with mine, though! Yeah! |

| Increased my year-end bonus from 8,000 RMB to 10,000 RMB because they thought I did a great job (and I'm not even re-signing with them). |

Well, when I taught at Guan Ya whose headquarters are in Shenyang
they would let me stay for free in one of their apartments when I had
to visit Shenyang. I got more days off that what was in the contract for
Chinese new year and when my contract was up I didn't have to clean
my apartment or pay to have it cleaned. |

Over the course of a year:
- dozens of banquets (not always enjoyable, but they tried)
- a turkey at Christmas
- boxes of mooncakes, crates of apples, and kilos of assorted cured meats (i don't eat meat, but again they were trying)
- gifts: a silk scarf, new sheets, chinese paintings, calligraphy, a tailored silk suit, badminton racket, "luxury" cigarettes...
- several day trips within the province
- payed for boyfriend's medical expenses when he was visiting and got hit by a car
- fao helped on shopping trips, haircuts, post office and bank errands, as well as arranging bus/train/plane tickets for holidays
- Chinese lessons
There were some very good things about that school, in spite of all the crazy shit we had to put up with. |

I didn't get the kind of goodies and gifts that many posters here did. However, post-burglary in my apartment at the university, that caused me a direct financial loss of about 7K (RMB's), they compenstaed me to the tune of 3K. Not enough, but not too bad either!
They offered to extend my contract for the next academic year but did not agree to an increase in my salary, saying I was already the highest paid (whatever that is supposed to mean, considering the many extras that locals get and FT's don't). Perhaps, in their collective mind, the compensation was meant to serve as a 'raise'. |
