An anthology of Glenskis "Daves ESL Critiques - Subtitled "Glenski, The Best of Glenski or The Glenski Years" - will shortly be available in Longman hardback and paperback edition.

It will contain all the original source texts, Glenskis subsequent, thoroughly annotated analysis (in original fonts with original smiley faces/eyes popping faces etc) - In addition the hardback version will contain absolutely original bonus critiques of Glenskis critiques by other respected members of the Daves ESL Japan discussion board.

The first edition of "Glenski - The man behind the myth" should be available in early 2004.

Advance orders can be placed here.

Bring it on! I`d rather read the best (and worst if there is such a thing) of Glenski than the long winded bombast that rugged toast was passing off as a contribution to what was intended as a discussion of different kinds of English.

If we are going to talk politics, then maybe you need to consider just why Koizumi wasn`t taking some stand against Bush re Iraq. Japan happens to live near North Korea which is controlled by a so called leader who would not hesitate to obliterate his neighbors and his own people if he felt like it.

North Korea is Japan`s biggest security nightmare, and the People`s Republic of China is also viewed with trepidation in terms of military security. The US has the necessary military and other power to keep the problem in check, irrespective of what political opinions we may hold.

That is why the bases will stay in Japan and that is why Koizumi is not going to try and ride on a simple anti Americanism to glean some votes. Nor most likely will his successor and it looks as if he is going to be dumped sooner rather than later.

Looks like later then... Wink

Hey rugged toast, yes, I can relate to you. What you are coming up against here is in fact a good thing, But IMHO it's a good thing being used badly.

Autonomy is a good thing to engender in Japanese students I feel. A student challenging a teacher over some info the teacher gives is a good thing as it shows they are not just sitting there being spoonfed.

However, what is not good is them doing it on a false or ignorant basis. So, when a student does this to me (and it is getting rarer as I teach the same people year after year), I give them the benefit of the doubt on, and only on, the basis that they check it out and give us feedback in a later class.

And you can bet I follow them up on it. 99% they find out they were wrong. Sometimes I find out I was. Either way, we all learn together and no one loses face.
