This year I have been making 6000 RMB, about half of what I was making last year in Guangzhou. I moved up here because I wanted to practice my Mandarin and I wanted to work with a small struggling company to see what I could do with it.

I have excepted a position for the next school year back in Guangzhou for 15,000 RMB per month with 12 contact hours per week, but other work on top of that.

I'm just wondering about Guangzhou. How far will 15K a month stretch there, in real terms? If you made that much here in Kunming, you could save at least half of it every month, if not more. I have these friends who go down to GZ every couple months or so and they say the cost of living is astronomical -- they go out to eat with a couple friends and end up spending 400RMB. These people are definitly the party type though, and they'll go out to the disco and spend a lot in a night here anyhow. I'm not a big fan of Guangzhou, but there are some parts of it I found tolerable. Forgive my relative ignorance on Guangzhou salaries, but 15k is still good there, I imagine?

A friend freelancing in Beijing (freelancing meaning no apartment provided, picking up here and there part time stuff) says he's got to make at least 10k a month there just to get by, whereas it would be relatively easy, if not the most pleasant thing in the world, to get by here on 3-4k. The big cities are always going to see bigger salaries I guess.

Man, I wish my position had programmes to fall back on.
I've been developing curriculums from past lesson plans and the internet all semester long!
It gets draining after a while, especially now; presenting a summer class of 4 classes a day every day for 15 days with no resources (except sporadic internet access) and a photocopy centre that is only open once every two or three days!!
Rolling Eyes

10 days left and then I'm gonna drink heavily for a day or two..

When I lived in Guangzhou previously I spent about 4000 RMB per month, with housing provided. I expect to be able to save about 10,000 RMB per month next year.

That's not too bad. I expect that if you had to pay for your own housing (I lived in the provided apartment my first semester teaching in China and wouldn't do it again -- I like choosing my own apartment), the cost would go up significantly (even with a housing stipend, I've found that most housing stipends would cover an extremely basic apartment, nothing really nice)?

Sorry, I know this thread is "How much do you make?" not "What's the cost of living really like in Guangzhou?" However, there is always a lot said about salary vs. cost of living in various cities and I'm curious as to what the actual real numbers are, and in a way, it is really hard to make blanket statements about Chinese salaries simply because of the differences between living in one of the major cities and living somewhere relatively obscure.

Yes, no vacation pay.

So what do they expect teachers to do for those 4 months? Busk??? Stand at the darkly lit street corner of a Pudong avenue?

Call me crazy, but I imagine that it's the teacher's responsibility to budget. Duh!

I'm in a similar situation where I have a very good salary for the in-class and admin parts of the year. But, no salary at all during the summer and winter holiday periods, except for the extra time needed for my DOS admin. No end of year bonus either. So, I generally don't think of my salary in terms of the monthly rate on my contract, but rather as the total annual amount averaged over the 12 months of the year.

Also, I can stay in my free on-campus apartment through the holidays if I'm not travelling.
