Hello,

I'm going to be coming to Mexico for 2 months, travelling a lot through the Yucatan for a month, Mex. city for a week or so and then Baja de California for a week or two. I have had a bit of trouble turning up info on camp sites and wondered if you guys could offer any help....

ta.

Ken,

Camping is for sadists, why not shell out a few quid on a hostel/hotel and save yourself the hassle of getting bitten, eaten or shat on?

Don't know about those areas, but there's some good camping on the Oaxacan coast.

There is a campsite at Sacbe Campground in Santa Helena on the Ruta Puuc in Yucatan state. Its about 10 miles from Ticul. Nice place. You can set up your own tent. Nice people.

What does exist of camping in Mexico tends to resemble European camping. You will lay your tent down in your campsite and will be hitting the arm of the guy in the next campsite. If you enjoy camping right on top one another, it exists. Don't expect luxuries, don't expect cleanliness.

That is not the case at SACBE. You will have more than ample room.

Do a Google search. There are some really good websites on campgrounds, prices and locations.

I spent a week camping on the beach in Troncones (Pacific Coast) this summer. Just asked a restaurant owner who was happy to let us use his facilities for a small fee.

It was stupidly hot though and not sure I'd do it again in the summer.

I suspect camping in Yucatan state would be much more comfortable during the winter months. I can't imagine camping in a tent during the sauna-like spring/summer months or the rainy/hurricane autumn season.

I've only been in one official camp ground in Mexico, near Palenque, and it was pretty crowded. My husband and I used to wilderness tent camp alot in the state of Oaxaca, particularly in the Mixteca. Wink no facilities, carry in and out all your stuff type deal. It was great, but I'm not sure I'd do it without a Mexican. I definately notice that people treat me differntly when I with him than they do when I'm without him.

The Mexican experience is always different with a Mexican pal by your side, even for guys. You always get a bit more respect.
Anyone know offhand, what that 'Gringo gathering' spot is half way down to Playa Azul from Puerto Vallarta?
