Morning quickie;

My visa is coming due this summer (late August).

How much time in advance should I go to immigration to renew it? I am on a spousal visa now, but fvck me if I can remember how far ahead I got it (it was 3 years ago).

Should I get the paperwork first, come home and acquire documents and then go back, or do it all in one glorious race?

You can start the process within two months of your expiration date and save yourself a trip by submitting everything together. If you don't have the forms you should be able to download them.
