Thanks for the clarification, winterlynx. I agree that 'one size fits all' is not necessarily a good way to look at certification. But it's clear that you agree that some level of supervised teaching practice is needed for new teachers entering the field. And I'll stand my ground that this is something the vast majority of GLOBAL trainees don't get.

dont be fooled by this global tesol college. it looks like they've patterned themselves after the old teachandtravel.CON model which basically is a 3-4 day orientation session to the world of ESL. i know, i did the so-called "course" with teach and travel back in 2000 and it was a complete waste of my time (little teacher training involved). they'll say all the right things to lure you in..... the owner and operator "professor" peter appleton was also a bit of a belligerent with whom i didnt get along after asking a few of the wrong questions during training.

if anyone is considering any real training at all, then make sure its at least 3-4 weeks long and you get some real (as real as it gets with model students) teaching practice.

avoid teachandtravel.CON and global tesol college. you're wasting your money.

finally, here's global tesol college's ace in the hole:

Quote:
Job Guarantee

(applies to non-native English speaking countries only)

If you follow our unique employment process which is outlined in our TESOL course, apply for positions that you are qualified for, and are not offered a job after completing one of our programs (in-class, online or by correspondence) we will gladly refund your money as long as it is within one year of program completion (subject to a 10% processing fee of total tuition fee).

Our programs are available to everyone, although the following conditions apply in order to qualify for the job guarantee:

* Graduate must be 18 years of age or older.
* Graduate must have completed a high school diploma or equivalent.
* Graduate must be a native English speaker, or a fluent non-Native English speaker (fluency to be determined the corresponding instructor or Global TESOL contact).
* Graduate must complete an entire TESOL Program including all courses. Students who complete specialization courses only are not eligible for this guarantee.
* Graduate must follow our specific employment process outlined in this manual (self-inquiry, research, letter fo introduction, cover letter, resume, reference letters, photo and interview).
* Graduate must apply for at least 10 different jobs in at least 3 different countries (30 jobs in total).

* Graduate must contact corresponding instructor or Global TESOL contact for job placement assistance on at least one occasion before eligible to apply for a refund. Corresponding instructor or Global TESOL contact must be able to validate this.

in their job guarantee they seem to have missed one provision that was there in the past: they used to say that the job applicant must apply for 30 jobs and get refusal letters from all 30 before qualifying for the money back guarantee. i'm sure they still have this provision, they just seem to have omitted it when they did an update of their site. at any rate, these job guarantee requirements can never be met since schools who dont want to hire teachers almost never write back saying they dont want you.

i put this info here because several people wanted a refund from teach and travel.CON but were told to take a hike. that organization has moved on as they had the better business bureau after them and they had to regroup out of a post office box somewhere in ottawa i think.

i'd steer clear of global tesol. spend your money on a reputable school that gives you four weeks of their time and a lot more useful information.
