For various reasons I'm contemplating the possibility of applying for (and probably getting) Turkish citizenship. The one big negative of doing military service won't apply to me. Is there any other reason I shouldn't do this? BTW I wish to retain my UK passport etc.
All constructive comments gratefully received. |

To 'turn Turk' no longer has the connotations that it once had. In UK nationality law you keep your UK nationality - even if your adopted motherland requires renunciation of your original nationality. |

Over at the forums on Mymerhaba.com there's a very thorough thread about this topic. |

Just out of curiosity (if it's not too nosy to ask) why do you want to take Turkish citizenship? I mean, what are the advantages? |

I've been in Turkey for a while - 13 years to date - always working legally, with work permit and ikamet. Now I want to continue to live in Turkey and maybe only work part-time. I know I can organise the ikamet myself but do not want to work illegally, and as schools are unlikely to process the paperwork for a work permit for a part-time teacher I'm looking for other options. |

justme, I love your new avatar! Where did you get it? I think I need to print it out, blow it up, and hang it in the cat's bedroom... remind her who is boss... |

yeah, justme, what's going on in the avatar? It looks like a kitten being pursued by Ninja Death Attack Weetabix. |

Making the photograph for my avatar must have been fun, especially if it involved actually chasing a kitten with toast puppets... |

I went through the whole application process. Spoke to a lawyer about military service etc. Took my application in and was told that I would have to change my name cos it had a "w" in it. |

I think if your kat has it's own bedroom you're far beyond ever again showing him who's boss! (then again, mine have their own bathroom so i should just shut up)
i think the avatar is calling out to me about a new way to control my kitten....
TOAST PUPPETS??!
how very cool... |
