Just wondering if anyone has any experiences with this school. What kind of pay should one expect for teaching in Toronto? They are currently looking for teachers and I was thinking of applying. Thanks for any help. Take care.

I live about 2 hours from Toronto and the teachers in my city get paid about $25 an hour--that's if you hold a BA and TESL. I would expect at least that, but that does depend on your qualifications. If you have a BA, Bed and TESL (or better) then you could expect more. Some private schools pay upwards of $45 an hour. Part of the problem is that you only work 15-20 hours a week. If you expect to live in an apartment and not become a regular at the food bank, you are going to have to supplement your income with private tutoring (the going rate is about $50 an hour ).

Good luck,

D

Thanks for that. Actually, I live in Mississauga and have looked into other schools as well. The going rate seems to be around 20 dollars an hour and a 20 hour teaching week. Regarding private lessons, any ideas on how I should go about that? Where to advertise? Thanks again for any help. Take care.

That's only $400/wk, $1600/mo., which works out to be less than $20,000 per annum! Impossible to live on. At least you could be rest assured that all of your taxes that will be coming off that salary will eventually find their way back to you since you will be well under the poverty line!

A lot of universities and community colleges in Toronto and Ontario have one-year TESL certificates. The market is flooded. Just like in many other occupations.

It isn't impossible to live on that much money. I did it for a couple of years (in fact I lived off less- like many university graduates I worked in a retail job for $7 and change an hour for 45 hours a week) . But you won't be able to have your own appartment. You'll have to go for a shared accomodations type of arrangement (renting out a single room in a townhouse with up to 8 other people, none of whom you knew before moving in).

Starting off in a career and being in poverty are pretty close to synonymous in Toronto. Except in TESL, it may never get much better unless you get an MA. It's partially what explains the vast number of Canadians teaching overseas.
