Does anyone have experience with flying in to Vietnam with a one-way ticket and a tourist visa? Does it cause problems with the border officals?

I'll be arriving in September to teach for a year (minimum), and don't want to pay for a return ticket if I don't have to.

Thanks for any help,
CK

Check with the airlines.

In recent flights to 'Nam and other countries I've been asked to present an onward or return ticket when I carried a tourist visa.

Maybe an onward ticket to Phnom Penh that is later refundable is a cheaper way to get around it.

Thanks for the tips!

In case anyone else was wondering the same thing, Delta Airlines has a link to info about Visa requirements, sorted by country of nationality and destination. In most cases, it's very detailed: they note that passengers may be refused entry to Thailand for a "hippy appearance" (but I think they mean hippie, as the description is about hair and cleanliness, not body measurements).

While it says that an "onward/return ticket is requried" for many countries, it doesn't specifically say this for Vietnam. It might not be worth the risk, though, and your suggestion of adding a refundable onward ticket to another SE Asian country is a good one. Thanks.

I don't think a one-way ticket is a problem. Many people travel overland to Cambodia, China and Laos.

As a matter of fact, I came here on a one-way ticket with China Airlines not even thinking it would be a problem and it wasn't. The only thing is that before departing from LAX I had to sign some form stating that I did have in pocket enough money to buy a return ticket. That's all.

I came on a three month tourist visa, extended it one time for another three months, then upgraded it to a six month business visa through my school and I've been renewing every six months since then. By the way, be careful about tourist agencies feeding you the story that you have to leave the country in order to renew your visa. They just want to sell a vacation package to you.

Good luck!

Thanks! You just saved me either a couple hundred dollars or a bit of anxiety.
