I want to teach English in Korea or Japan. I have a bachelors from a large, well known university in western canada, but have some questionable grades, ok, bad grades on my transcript.
How might this affect getting a quality job?
Do most jobs require a grades transcript? |

In Korea - almost all jobs will require transcripts. They are used only as further proof/documentation of your degree. I doubt your potential employer will ever see them as they go to immigration in their "official" sealed envelops.
If they did see them, I doubt they would know how to read/interpret them.
So the answer to your question - is that your grades will most likely NOT affect your job possibilities. |

Your personality will probably more important than the grades on your transcript. Now, why in the world did I study so hard during college? I should have been out drinking more. |

I think Korean employers actually prefer you to be a little dumb. I was there for 13 months and I will never recover from my shell shock. |

You need the degree to get a work visa. Transcripts are usually optional and may not even be requested at all. They are often used to confirm that your degree parchment is not faked, not to assess your intelligence or scholarship.
Besides, most people in Japan get hired with degrees unrelated to teaching, so why would some employers care if you got a C- in astrophysics? |

Glenski, you jump all over people for not being specific. Please be specific when you post, since if you are not your information is inaccurate.
Transcripts are not optional in Korea. They are required by immigration. You cannot get a visa without one. Simple as that. As far as I know transcripts are optional in China. |

Specific? Well, since some employers here don't ask for transcripts and some immigration offices don't either, my earlier post is about as specific as it can be for Japan. However, that means some employers and/or immigration offices do ask for them.
Say you are about to graduate but don't have the degree parchment. I would expect to provide transcripts along with a certified letter from the university. But this is an extreme example, and I have heard of people who have had their degree for years being asked to provide transcripts here. |

The point is that you did not really make it clear to the OP whether you were talking about Japan or Korea. The OP said that he or she would like to work in Japan or Korea. |

In your first paragraph there is no reference as to whether you are talking about Japan or Korea or both. |

Fair enough, although I would think that since my avatar says I'm in Japan, I can't vouch for Korea.
OP, I am talking ONLY about Japan, ok? |
