|
|
Hello ppl,
Ok, I'm a fresh CELTA graduate from London, and after having completed the course a month or so ago, I am now ready to dive head on in into the colourful world of TEFL!
For the past few months I have been searching in great depth and applying for suitable positions in Hong Kong, where I have also posted my resume, on sites such as: tefl.com, scmp, jobsDB, asiaexpat, EMB, and eslbase.
I have had a few positive replies, but nothing concrete has materialised. A lot of the vacancies are for teaching kindergarten level, which I'm not completely averse to, but my experience and expertise lies in teaching adults and teenagers and perhaps primary school children. Perhaps my resume might need a review, but I have already done this a number of times, although I would be happy to consider restructuring it, if it would help.
I am also looking for a centre/school for sponsorship, allowing me to live and work there, and I realise that this would probably narrow down my opportunities.
Any advice and help or pointing in the right direction for suitable TEFL positions in Hong Kong would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for reading. |

It seems that you don't actually have a lot of expertise and flexibility and therein lies the problem. As a new teacher, it's hard to get a quality post in HK. There are already many well-qualified and well-seasoned teachers here. You are also outside of HK and thus unavailable to be interviewed in person. In my experience, there are only a few schools - yes, the kindergartens - which will hire new teachers from outside of HK. You may have to get some experience elsewhere and then try to enter the HK scene. |

Thanks for your reply Poof,
sounds like a very cultured and educated response. I'm beginning to feel that way too now, and I'm pretty certain I have to go elsewhere first for a little more experience. It does seem like the TEFL market is a little saturated with experienced teachers in HK, although this has not deterred me. I've had a lot more response from Japan and China, and maybe I have to look to go there first, but I am still on the hunt for that elusive first job in HK, and will pretty much take anything - up to a reasonable point! |
