My potential situation is like none other that I have read in any thread - anywhere. I am a 45-year-old teacher with three years experience in the USA. I have a B.S., a teaching certificate, etc. I am willing and able to obtain a TEFL, CL-whatever, or nay other combination of capital letters to boost my resume. I am willing to work in schools or businesses. I don't care if I am teaching children, adults, or both. In addition, upon arriving in Vietnam, I would be marrying my Vietnamese fiancee. Our primary goals would be to live reasonably well (that includes privacy and airconditioning), and save a butt - load of money for our return home to the states. I would welcome any and all comments and/or suggestions regarding the fesability of the aforementioned plan.

Thanks,

bigsandy

Here's the thing bigsandy:

What exactly is a butt-load of money?

Let me start with the beginning - If you get a CELTA - it will definitely be a useful (couple of capital letters) addition to your CV - get it - I strongly recommend it. By doing so you will be able to get the higher paying jobs here.

Second, I suggest that you lower your standards when it comes to privacy. Simply put there is none and there's even less if you're married to someone whose Vietnamese. Those invading your privacy will be foreigner and local alike. airconditioning, however, no prob!

Third and back to the start: What exactly is a butt-load of money?
If you get a decent job here you can save (at least) $1000 a month and live pretty well. If you are using some of your salary to take care of your fiancee then obviously the number changes.

Furthermore - to save a huge amount you'll have to be here for the long-term and do understand that the things that annoy you after 6 months don't go away but merely aggravate you further as time spent here increases.

This is one candid opinion that was hopefully useful to you in some way.

Good Luck to you!

Your plan sounds fine with your experience. A CELTA is important for getting jobs that pay well. The Vietnamese government have made getting married here even more difficult and time consuming. Too many guys, mostly Taiwanese and Korean, coming here to find an instant wife through an online agent and the government are cracking down. See the link below for the full story.
