I have spent three years on the mainland and am thinking of going to Taiwan. Any advice on major differences to note, and especially any info. on Dewey Agency and Hsinchu City would be appreciated. Desireable cities, undesireable, etc. Thanks

Has David Huang from Dewey been flooding your inbox, as he has been flooding mine? I am also on the Mainland and am looking to move on. I hopped over to this forum to have a look and just did an exhaustive search. David's name came up rather too disturbingly for me. Disturbingly negative, that is. You mentioned Hsinchu and that is also what David has been plugging to me.

A brief re-play: a few months back when I began my job search, I responded to an ad by Dewey. I ended up with David and his poor writing skills. I got a deluge of job notices from him, most of which didn't interest me terribly. Eventually, I found a good job elsewhere. I was still hearing from David. I emailed him, telling him that I had an offer that I had decided to take and thanked him very much for his time and trouble, etc. This apparently, fell on deaf ears, as within a day or so, I was again flooded with the same (automated?) offers. I emailed him again with pretty much the same message and again got the same tired response to the effect of "HELLO (insert name here) GREAT JOBS IN (insert cities here) !!!!! I decided that the guy had reading comprehension problems and disregarded his further emails.

Then sadly, at the 11th hour, the job I had settled on fell through (no surprise - this IS China) on the very day that I had received about the 50th email from the never-discouraged David. I emailed him back about an elementary school post in Hsinchu and asked him to send me the contract, so that I could look it over. He did that and in the interim, sent me two more email messages, asking me if I was also interested in the position which he had mentioned many emails ago in Chunghua (if the spelling's wrong, blame David - I'm going by his spelling). This was beginning to feel a bit like bait-and-switch to me and I was starting to feel wary. I replied that I really was not interested, given the location and lower salary. I also mentioned that the salary that he had quoted in his email had been left unspecified in the contract, and could he confirm that the higher salary was the correct one?

And lo and behold, Mr. One Thousand and One Emails seems to have scuttled away, silenced for the time being, if not forever. It makes one wonder, does it not? I'm not feeling overly trustful of Mr. David and doubt that we'll be conducting any further business any time soon. I get the feeling that in a few weeks time when he has not filled his positions, he'll be flooding me again. Only to be met with silence on my part.

Bottom line: Dewey itself, seems to have a decent reputation. David however, may be the one bad apple. Were I you, I would tread with caution if it is in fact, David you are dealing with.

We've been through this quite a few times. Recruiting companies, like any other industry have both good and bad companies. The bad companies seem clear (IACC, for example).

Good companies, like Reach To Teach, also seem like good options for teachers.

Just like anything else, it's important to look at the individual organization.

I would strongly recommend you heed this advice.

Good luck!

Aristotle, as usual, we'd ask you to tell us WHY. Some actual information to credit your blanket statements isn't too much to ask, is it?
