Hi,
I have lurked here for a few weeks to get my bearings and just registered on the site - which is great, by the way. My husband and I may be moving our family to Mexico in 2-3 years from the US, and I have a few questions I was hoping someone could answer. I know 2-3 years is a long time, but we have 2 kids (now 6 and 3) and starting now gives us time to really check out the legalities, learn some Spanish, etc.
In 2-3 years, my husband will have a master's in bilingual/bilcultural ed. plus teaching certification for elementary school. He has about 3 years of previous ESL experience in Europe, plus a CELTA qualification. I have a translation business, which I want to continue. We are going to start learning Spanish this fall. We have one child in school - she is currently in a Spanish immersion program - and one child in preschool, who would be starting kindergarten when we move.
1. Would my husband realistically be able to get a teaching job at a bilingual school/international school/university with his future qualifications? We were told that international schools don't like candidates with families where the other spouse is not a teacher. His income would not be a concern, as we are supported fully by my income.
2. Would I be able to continue working in Mexico? I have read in a couple of places that as long as you are working for a foreign company that does no business in Mexico/with Mexican customers, you are OK without a work permit. I have my own US-based company and only do business with US and European customers who pay the money into my account in the States. I would technically not be doing business in Mexico. Haven't found this info on an official site, though.
3. Would it be hard to get the kids into school? We would prefer not to send them to a very expensive private school, particularly because at least our older daughter is already used to a Spanish classroom environment. We have seen that international schools in some countries run $10k per year or more, but don't know about Mexico.
Sorry this is so long-winded and specific, but hoping someone can help nonetheless!
Cheers,
