Hello There,
I'm heading to Santiago in September to look for work teaching. I thought I'd try and see if I can set up a bank acct w/ a Chilean bank in the states (no luck) but one bank suggested that I open an acct with citibank because they have a branch in Santiago. Does anyone know if this bank is recognized there as being a real bank - i.e. trying to get a place to live, etc. - or is it better to get there, get the work visa and then open an account from there (assuming all goes well).

Any input would be greatly appreciated and I'd love to meet up with any and all looking to hang out with the new arrivals.

Thanks.

I don't know about Citibank (sounds like a good option if it really works, though), but I do know that, with very few exceptions, foreigners usually don't get bank accounts! There was one school that would open accounts in their teachers' names, but I think the norm was to get paid in cash and then hide it somewhere in your apartment. Making apartment complexes that house gringos easy targets!

I was only there for a few months, though... Hopefully more long-term folks can set the record straight?

Thanks Denise.

It seems to me the most efficient way is to get the work permit, the id card and then the RUT number. A friend of mine said there might be another way but I'll have to investigate when I get there. If I find out I'll certainly post here for other. I'm still curious about the citibank account. It would be great if it could work out.

Thanks.

It is possible to open a bank account here. Generally all you'll need is your RUT and a copy of your contract. However, be warned that the process can take months and they may only allow you to have very basic facilities.

Citibank is a recognised bank here, there are branches throughout Santiago.

Thanks for the information. I appreciate it. It looks like Citibank is a good way to go.
