I've been teaching english for 3 years in Europe but I'm now thinking about going to thailand to do a bit of travelling and hopefully get some some work teaching. I'm a diabetic(insulin dependent) and wondered if there are others out there who could advise me on the availability of medical treatment or any other problems which may occur from this.

Thailand has some world class hospitals/clinics - particularly in Bangkok.
Phuket and Chiang Mai - also have very decent facilities. Generally very good quality health care - at a fraction of the cost back home.
Some non-generic medications can be as pricey as back home - but generic medications are sometimes 1/10 the Western-world cost.
Medical care was one of my criteria when I decided that I would eventually retire here (not retired yet!).
Personally - I think the quality of care (at the better facilities) is FAR better than lousy doctors I experienced in the USA (hate to pimp my own country - but so it is . . .).
Just as an aside - one thing I like about the doctors here is that they LISTEN to you. I have spent as much as 15-20 minutes in consult with a doctor solving problems that could not get solved back home - as the doctors were on a factory schedule to maximize their income. Here you feel like a patient - not a customer. |

Ditto ted on healthcare, and there's more good news:
All but the most potent drugs are available over-the-counter
without a prescription - including antibiotics and insulin.
I dropped by the corner drugstore today to enquire
on your behalf, and here's what they had in stock:
Humulin N
Humulin R
Humulin 70/30
made in Germany by Eli Lilly
100 ml injection
cost: 360 Baht
Insulatard HM
Mixtard 30 HM
made in Denmark by Novo Nordisk
100 ml injection
cost: 340 Baht
At the moment, US $10 = roughly 340 Baht, fyi. [exchange rate EDITED 10 December 2007]
