Hi
I was squirrelling through the postings and I saw yours regarding the fact that extra quals don't count in terms of salary banding. I have a BA, Grad Dip Teah , Grad Dip Literacy Ed, DELTA and have submitted my thesis for MEd and have one semester for MTESOL and 18 years experience in public schools in OZ and Brunei. I was putting off leaving my current job until I have the Masters paperwork as I assumed that a Masters would place me on a higher banding in terms of pay. Am I wrong?
What kind of banding entry could I expect without my Masters paperwork?
Sorry if this is a bit too specific ... just curious (I have a morgage)

I'm not Freddie. I don't know where he is. He hasn't been hanging around here for some time. Maybe he has left HK.
I have almost the same quals as you. the masters will not get you any more money.
With your quals and experience you should be on top or close to top of payscale - (based on your degree and Dip ed). I assume you are secondary NET. the other quals you have (as I do) really don't count in regard to salary / bands.
Most new nets will be starting this August although I believe the EMB are continuing to hire now throughout the year. I'd imagine that there wouldn't be quite so many positions mid year.

I guess I should've said August 97. June is when we would finish up here. NETS actively recruits from Brunei every January for the beginning of the academice year.
I am glad to hear about the Masters - my husband will be relieved he won't have to one - he keeps starting and never finishes!!
What would be the top of the scale to start do you think? My husband has BA Dip Teach and ICELT with 21 years experience. We are looking at Hong Kong as our last teaching position.

I'm just finishing up a PhD myself (already submitted). I slaved my butt off for that thing. Won't get an extra cent for it. The EMB gave me heaps of trouble with some of my documents, so I am earning about 20 000 a month less than many other NETS here. So don't think quals and experience automatically guarantee a high salary. I recently changed schools, and when I told the deputy principal what pay scale I was on he stared at me in disbelief. Not as much disbelief though, as I showed when I saw that the previous NET had been getting 20K a month more than me (I saw it from a copy of the previous NET's contract whiuch they foolishly gave me as an example). |

We have friends in HK working for NETS - same deal - hustling to get the money they are entitled to...
I am still ferreting around trying to get my prac teaching hours accedited - like so many others that was almost 20 years ago!!!
Another query...
Are all classes the exam type class or are some conversation? I am just so tired at the moment trying to get 96 kids throuhh the cambridge O-level English (not ESL either).
