So do these merchants of death specifically say that they are offering 'danger money' because, as you said 'there is a war in the region'? In other words, were there to be no such war, would the 'danger money' no longer be paid? |

Please take note of when Cleopatra joined this board. She has been living in Saudi since that time at least.
As to your list, what percentage of expat EFL teachers are included here... 90%? 50%? 10%? less?

Oh well, another American dude who has his ego swollen by life in Eastern Europe. Nothing exceptional at all about that. Definately best for you to stay in PL, KSA will be a bit of a shock for you.

Your method is to attack the person. Very mature.
Do tell, how does living in Europe swell one's ego?

I didn't claim any sophicticated knowledge about ME affairs. We have roughly the same access to information. However, here is a quote from your host:
The king of Saudi Arabia has warned that war could break out in the Middle East if attempts to broker peace in the region fail.
In a statement read out on state television on Tuesday, King Abdullah said, "If the option of peace fails as a result of Israeli arrogance, then the only option remaining will be war, and God alone knows what the region would witness in a conflict that would spare no one."

Of course he's not a 'serious analyst,' and most likely it's just saber rattling, but who knows what will happen. |

I said "Eastern Europe". Having worked there for several years, I am well acquainted with the manner in which many teachers - mostly but not exclusively male, and many of whom would be barely employable elsewhere - find their egos swollen by their status as "Westerners" in the wild lands of the east. This may not be as extreme as it once was, since many of these countries have joined the EU and are no longer so impressed bya a maroon passport, but a glance at the relevant pages on this site, for example, will confirm that the phenemon is alive and well.

How on earth do you know what 'access to information' I have??? I can tell you that I don't depend on US puppet kings as a source, however.

You're absolutely right - no Arab "leader" who backed Israel in this war, failing to foresee the brutality of the Israeli assault, and the consequent rage of his own people, could be taken too seriously. Oh, and BTW, nowhere does the King say any such war would directly involve KSA. His statement is very vague, and is probably meant as some form of backpeddling from his previous support for the "israeli arrogance" he nor purports to condemn.
As for "saber rattling", that's an odd statement. Seeing as the Saudi army is hopeless, I dont' think anyone (except Saudi soldiers) is going to be cowering in fear at the prospect of them getting involved.
Anyway, in a sense all of this is pointless. If you're worried about coming to KSA because of a "war in the region", stay in PL. |

I agree, this discussion with you is pointless. You're ego gets in the way. Checking from your other posts, you generally react in negative ways. Civility is more professional. I'm done.

Definitely pointless. This is the third time you said that I should stay in PL, except now you invented that I'm worried. Cleo, you keep making your own movie. Let's quit. Pax. |

| Yes, it is indeed pointless, Anytime, since you didn't answer my very direct and simple question. |

You obviously have no experience of the current situation here in KSA. The answer to your question is Yes. |

I've never been able to work out what motivates people to write things like this. You're right, of course, I'm making up my experience in KSA. I want you and all the other sparkling intellects here to think I live there. My motivation is.... um... clear... every girl wants to pretend she lives in KSA, no?

So, what you're saying, if I understand it, is that some companies offer teachers 'danger money' because of an above-mentioned "war in the region". However, were such war not to take place, the money would still be given? In which case the "danger money" is not in fact tied to a specific war at all, is it? |

Danger money started with the Al-Qaeeda attacks. Those teaching the military were considered particularly likely to be targets.
The truth is that the only time you get danger money is when there is a small perceived possibility of danger. When there is real danger, as in Iraq, Lebanon and Palestine, people evacuate. |

It is much more difficult to live and work in KSA than it was a few years ie pre 9/11.
There is a good reason why companies like BAE and Vinnel etc were offering danger money and that is because many people were leaving due to the instability in the region.
I left Saudi last year after a very long stretch and I was earning more than double what the OP is quoting.
I would think very carefully before accepting such an offer especially bringing your wife and family into such an environment.
If you are really desperate then do it for a couple of years and get out but only do it if you are really really desperate. |

| Personally, I don't consider myself "desperate" and yet I'm quite happy in KSA. So are many of my friends and colleagues, and I don't consider them "desperate" either. |

I've said it before and I'll say it again: weak attempts at schoolboy 'insults' do not cover the fact that you have again failed to answer a simple question.
In fact they just make you look like, welll, a schoolboy. |

We aren't talking about your situation rather we are giving advice to the OP.
The sort of salary that is being offered to the OP is probably not worth it unless he is desperate for cash considering what he will have to put up with. |
