Hey all. Here's the deal. I'm having really bad problems with a specific company who interviewed me (in the US), promised me a specific location, gave me my work visa, and then changed where I would be working. I haven't even left the US yet! I'm scheduled to be in Tokyo on the 9th. I had previously told them that I chose Saitama (where my friends are), but they switched my placement to Tsukuba (in Ibaraki prefecture).

What should I do? What happens if I just don't show up to their training? Can I still look for another job and still have a valid work visa?

Any advice/suggestions would help!

Considering that very few if any English conversation schools will promise you an exact location you probably won't end up where you want if you bail and try a different place.

Also, Tsukuba isn't that far (I think) from Saitama. It is also 45 mins away from Tokyo on the Tsukuba Express. Tsukuba is a pretty good place, so I wouldnt whine. Just visit your friends from time to time on the weekends.

Ditto. Saitama borders Ibaraki.

Good morning, good evening, good afternoon wherever the part of the world you are:

Hi, call that company and tell them how much bullsh** they are. I understand you!
I believe you can work for them for only 3 months and then you can send them straight to hell. Otherwise that would be "contract violation" o some crap like that. Which can get you into trouble. I guess you can hold your breath for 3 months then run. But please make sure you read all those rules because I am no expert! Just a warning my friend, for now...
Be well,

Is this company by any chance Interac?

The question is how much do you really want the job? If you have a better deal elsewhere, then go for it. Personally, I'd take what they give me, start working for them, and then jump ship once I've found something better. Laughing

Companies cannot always guarantee placement.

One of the reasons placement isn't guaranteed is because of people who agree to a contract, but get ticked off over minor things like being afraid to meet new people because they aren't near their friends, and jump ship before it docks.

Where in Saitama do your friends live? You can get there in less than an hour, which is shorter than many people's daily commute.

I agree with Canuck, god help me.

As for the OP's question. Take the job. It's all in the Tokyo area. What is so great about Saitama? Personally, I wouldn't live there if the rent was free. You are rejecting a job offer because they won't send you there? Perhaps you should thank them.

Perhaps that is because what you said was stupid. You suggested that someone call a company which had offered them a job and provided a visa, and tell them to fu*k off. The reason you suggested this is because the company wanted to place them in a (slightly) different location.

Ohhhhh!! You are smart and inciteful!!

YOU are probably this guy's boyfriend, here:
If they offered you to work In Washington, DC and they send you to Maryland... that SUCKS. that is not what they offered at first.
You probably just swallow that and say, ok I will obey.
Because during your childhood they promised you to get you a new bike and you got a Thai Transexual-Barbie. And you liked it! That's the attitude I see when you talk. Speaking for other people.
I am not cool, I am not trying to go against ANY system. But man!: do not take crap from anyone.
Damn right

The north-east part of Saitama does border on Ibaragi, I used to be able to see Mt. Tsukuba from where I lived on a clear day. However Saitama is quite a big prefecture, and if your friends were in south-west Saitama it would take a lot longer to get to where they are.

To tell you the truth though, most of Saitama is a hole- it's flat, dusty, one of the hottest places in Japan- up to 40 deg C one day when I lived there, and although it's rural, it's not pretty at all- vegetable fields with light industry and residential areas at various points and very few trees considering the amount of space.

I lived there about a year and avoid the place like the plague now. As someone said, it's all Kanto and 1 or 2 hours on the train should take you to where your friends are on the weekend. Ibaragi is nicer anyway- nearer the coast, more mountainous.

I've been looking up info on Tsukuba and it doesnt seem like much of a bad place... I just wanted my transition to a new country more smoother. Thanks all!
