Hey guys! after a not so good start with a school in Naples I am contemplating a job with IH Milan, does anyone have any info on living in Milan, is it really expensive??
The salary they're posing is 1100euro net, is this enough for Milan or will I not survive? They will be giving me a metro card every month so I wont pay for travel. Also, is it true its difficult to make frends in Milan and everyone is label mad, so if you're not wearning D&G you wont fit in?? Are there cheap places to shop too?
Cheers guys! |

I'v only been here 4 months and I get about 1400 which is enough. Rent in a shared appartment will be about 400-500 a month so it will not leave you with much, it all depends if you have enough time for privates. The metro card is only 30 euros a month but it all helps. Don't worry about the labels, it realy isn't that important. I haven't done much shopping here there will be cheap places to go, I'm just not sure where. If you like going out more than once a week then it can be very expensive here, but there are some cheaper places to go. My first teaching job was in Puglia and I haven't made friends as easily here, but that is probably due to the difference between living in a large city and a small town and also I only ever planned to be here short term. |

I can't really advise you about costs and IH, but it's interesting what you say about making friends.
I used to live in a small town just outside Milan and made some very good friends there - mainly people who lived outside and commuted into Milan to work. It's true that everyone there is scarily well-dressed, but there is also an excellent social life. In fact, I'd say I had a better social life in Italy than I have anywhere else.
Whatever you decide, good luck and keep us posted! |

Don't count on living on EUR 1100 net in Milan. I was in Torino, which is marginally cheaper, and my budget broke down like this:
EUR 400 - rent in a shared apartment (including building fees, gas & electricity)
EUR 50 - local & long distance calls
EUR 400 - food and entertainment (I cook a lot and eat out frequently but don't drink much alcohol)
EUR 200 - incidentals (house stuff, clothes, taxis, etc)
The school paid for my monthly transit pass. I also saved about EUR 150 every month, which I used for travel during the months that the school was closed. Remember that you might not be getting that EUR 1100 every month of the year (esp. December and August), and you'll need money for flights home at holidays (if you go) and general living expenses during the slow months. |
