Perhaps the conditions at a university are more laid back; however, I've found the students I've taught at some mills to be more motivated/curious about the English language than those forced to attend a 口语课 at university. These "higher places of education" may be bedazzle some foreigners who would be lucky to find employment as a university janitor in Canada, but here in China are referred to as "experts" for merely opening their trap in front of eighty people. For the most part, I've witnessed more educating in the couple of chain schools I've moonlit at than in any university.
And, it's just TESL/TEFL. I'm not sure about others, but the arrogance I've seen among many white folk who teach in China is outrageous. I doubt that such chest thumping even goes in top secret underground facilities devoted to developing weapons of awesome destruction.
My guess is that increased arrogance helps balance the low pay received by many teachers. |

There may be something to this. It's just my subjective opinion, but I think I've met more people who seemed overly impressed with themselves for teaching TESL/TEFL than in almost any other field I've run across. The reality, of course, is that as academic careers go language teaching is near the bottom of the barrel both in terms pay and perception.
Outside of English teaching the occasional big-head I meet usually has significant accomplishments to go along with the inflated ego. In the TESL/TEFL field, however, I often still think of many people I meet: "Man, that 'sensei' title has really gone to your head. Especially considering all you're basically doing is getting students to parrot back what you're telling them in your native language." |

They eat rice in Indonesia too. In fact, a lot of it and instead of using chopsticks, they eat with their hands. |

Coming back to this lovely topic, let me get you guys take a few more shots at my farce EF experience. The official reason for my dismissal  was that my views on the center's operation in the position of Director of Studies there differed from the views of my employer (quite a fair one ). My employer asked me to prepare and clone the McChain Menu alla "family recipe", but I insisted using the "McChain" one, the "McChain" way and with the "McChain" signature.
How would you deal with your McDonalds employer, if he/she asked you to make a "slight" change to "Mcburgers" there
How would you deal with your McDonalds employer in the position of a manager there, if he/she asked you to clone the "signature" (brand name) and move a few employees around
And this is sincerely a former McDOS of McEF,

I think TP..was just making a comment on what was said and a VERY small joke....
Remember before and when you came to Dalian..you had so much more to say....
If you want to know what other expats think of ESL teachers..come to Beijing and tell someone on "bar street" your a teacher...many often hang their head when speaking out their job tittle...but I would not be insulted by that...there is so much more to be embarrassed for.... like friends drunkin behavior..on....Bar Street... |

I see.
I guess there are a couple of ways to look at it. A Mc is a Mc to me and I connect it to McDonalds. Anyway, that's how I've seen it here. Then, I thought, you saw it the same way too. But I guess I was wrong there.
In any case, out of those mentioned "chain schools" above only McEF has advertised as THE MCDONDALS OF EDUCATION once. And that's where my "French connection" comes from.
