Just arrived in Tokyo last week - at last!

Sorry if these questions have been asked before ....

How do I go about opening a bank account here? What do I need to take with me and which bank is most likely to give me an account?

Where is the best place to get a (cheapish) mobile phone?

Any good websites (or tips) for cheap flights to Hong Kong?

Thanks in advance Smile

Welcome.

Any bank will give you an account. Shinsei bank has been recommended a lot lately because of their online banking in English and low fees. You need your gaijin card to open an account. I use Tokyo Mitsubishi. Do you have a job yet? Some employers will want you to open an account with their bank, so they can transfer your pay to your account more cheaply.

Go to one of the big Electronics shops like Yodobashi Camera or Sakuraya. Bring your passport and gaijin card. You should be able to get a phone for 0 yen. However if you are on a tourist visa, you can only get a prepaid phone. Unless this rule has changed, if your visa is for 90 days or less, you can't get a regular phone.
As for provider, I have used AU and Vodafone. Au is my preferred choice by far. Much better signal.

Good luck!
PM if you need anything. I know Tokyo pretty well.
