Hello from Jakarta Barat. I've been in this job now three weeks and loving it - great school, great wage, great accommodation. For those of you who don't think Jakarta's a place children, my 14 month old daughter is having an absolute ball. |

Don't you think she's a little young to be going out alone? |

Each to his own.

Well, the ten-fold increase in pay from this job compared to my EF gig I used to do is certainly an increase from my personal perspective. |

Does this mean it's an invitation? When is it? What shall I wear? |

from wat i hear about the average tefl techers' pay in jakarta and the cost of living there, a 'ball' is about all parents can afford to buy for a 14 month old child.
best

Well, let's see, we take her for walks in the afternoon to watch the kampung children play soccer, then she rides with the other kampung kids on those peddle-powered mery-go-round things that visit every afternoon. Her mum takes her to the market by ojek which she loves. Then we also go over the road to the health centre which we get free membership at and she plays around the swimming pools - not yet old enough to swim yet. Plus the apartment complex we live in courtesy of the school has kiddie fascilities - swings, pool etc.
Then there's the gymboree thing in the mall where she can go to to play and interact with the other kids. There's plenty of children here playing outside in the afternoons. Always something for her to see. Sure beats doing what most western kids do all day - TV, playstation, TV, playstation, eat, TV, Playstation, eat while watching TV........ |

Congratulations on your 70.000.000rp a month (10xEF) job. You must be saving a lot of money, considering you are using ojeks to get around

That's funny...I am assuming you have never taught Asian children |

Your high figure assumes my last EF gig was recent and in Jakarta. Neither - Semarang, 1998.
As for ojeks - only to get to the mall and, on occasions, the pasar. The pasar, where we get most of our grub is just around the corner so generally we walk. The school I teach at is a three minute stroll from our apartments where several other expat teachers also live. So no money spent there either. The blue bird home from the mall costs about 10,500rp.

Well, yes, I do realise that our well-fed, silver-spooned chinese students do that as well. I was just emphasising the fact that keeping your kids at home in Australia/US rather than bringing them to Jkt is no guarantee that they will grow up more globally informed. |

What, are you stuck down in some slum in Jl Jaksa or something?

Well, let's see - the school's two-level cafeteria has about 10 different 'warungs' if you like, such as the Chicken lady - she sells a variety of yummy things, yes, with rice, for about Rp8000, then there's Wendys next to her - they sell burgers, baked potatoes and the usual Wendy's-type grub, then the ice cream lady - she sells decent quality ice cream and milk shakes for about Rp3000 and a number of other stalls.
As for other times, yes, we mainly eat local food. That doesn't mean it's not good quality. It does mean that I'm not seeing my $$ disappear because I can't make the change from my dearly beloved steaks and expensive western food. Why live in another country if all you do is nothing different from back home, and then get depressed about it? |
