Thanks everyone for the good advice. We ended up negotiating a 3 day trip by ourselves and 3 days of local travel with guides. Not perfect, but it's a start. We figure that after this we can start taking some weekend trips as well. I truly believe that they are just worried about us (and their jobs of course) but i was interested to hear other opinions on this. It's good to know we're not alone in being overprotected!
thanks again-

And like others said here - you don't ASK - you just TELL them that you're leaving. Like when I flew down to HK for a few days - I just TOLD them to organize the re-entry visa. |
I totally agree with those that take trips or travel on their own; we're not "prisoners" and employers shouldn't have the right to control our private lives.
But at the same time we have to take responsibility for what we do. You "TOLD" the school they had to arrange your re-entry????
Why is your employer responsible for your re-entry visa? This was your decision take a trip, not theirs. It seems pretty rude to go to your school and say, "I'm taking a trip and you have to arrange my paperwork." The school has to pay for a visa because you want to go somewhere?
Why didn't you ask politely or have a friend help you? If I was your boss I would have told you to go ahead and take a trip but don't expect me to shell out for your entertainment. |

If you are in a military town, then, it might be that the school leaders don't want you to see the training maneouvers or maybe previous EFLers had trouble in that place when they went out alone before. One is left to speculate. |
