Hello all!
I'll be heading over to Japan shortly and I'm thinking about work clothes. I've read through ECC's dress-code and it sounds pretty much like girls can wear whatever as long as it's not too revealing and looks dressy. I was just wondering-are skirts and shirts with flowers printed on them and what-not commonly seen around the office? Are these things dressy enough or should I stick with the button up blouses and black pants? I just don't want to bring anything that I'm not going to end up being able to wear.
Thanks for your help

Oh god.. wear skirts. Stop trying to dress like a man O_o
Seriously though, those should be fine. My ex wears skirts and stuff and there are no problems. Just follow the dress-code about flip-flops and jeans and don't go to work looking like a slob, black-death goth, or a prostitute, and otherwise you'll be okay.
Oh, and skirts + stocking ftw. O_o
EDIT: Grats on getting the job! |

I wouldn't suggest wearing something flowery to work, only because you wouldn't likely see a Japanese women doing that. ECC wants you to be pretty dressy. Just remember that you'll be teaching kids and it's hot inside schools and out, so somthing versatile is important. |

Oh yes, they actually recommend NOT wearing skirts when teaching kids. Trust me, some kids are very curious!
Most school are airconditioned though. There are, of course, those that aren't. I'm lucky this year. Cool air everywhere! |

In one particular class, the kids loved to hug me. They'd all crowd around a do a huge group hug, so much so that I couldn't even walk. You can image they are all hugging me around me waist and hips. I'm so glad I was wearing a kulot and not a skirt.
I don't know about ECC, but I do know with many schools you teach children by sitting on the floor with them.
It might be uncomfortable to teach children wearing a skirt. However, I once wore a floral skirt to work and they LOVED it. I got so many compliment how "pretty" I looked. |

If both skirts and pants are acceptable, go with whatever's most comfortable. ("Trying to dress like a man"? Catch up with the 20th century, please.) |

It became common for women to wear trousers/pants in the 20th century, so I think wintersweet had it right. |

Exactly my point. (Some people may have a ways to go to reach the 21st century.) |

Oh god people take things far too seriously here. ~_~;
A lot of ECC teachers wear skirts. It's okay to wear them (even to kids classes) but of course you'll get the occasional curious child who'll want to look under your skirt though really it'll never be an issue.
Acceptable? Yeah okay. But cute? Mmm... |

Actually those are normal skirts- the photos have been taken with a particular kind of camera. I saw a TV programme last year where these guys walk around on the beaches here with hidden cameras which can actually see through bathing suits. Then the pictures are often published on the net.
Apparently a white bikini for some reason remains opaque to this camera so it's the best bet. One of the beach lifeguards' jobs is to look out for these guys! |

that's not technologically possible. those images must have been photoshopped. |

I don't know about the above photos, you might be right, but what I watched was a serious TV programme. They had a mannequin with different bikinis and were showing through the viewfinder that you could actually see through the bikinis, except the white one. Or maybe it was an April Fool thing and I swallowed it hook, line and sinker... |
