| Has anyone heard of schools trying to take passports away from employees that wanted to be released from their contracts?Does this happen in China? |

Yes, this happens here. Some schools will even try to confiscate your passport (and other documents such as your residence permit) for the entire duration of your employment there. Never, never ever let anyone do this. You may have to let them take your passport while they get your Z visa, but if you don't get them back promptly upon completing this process then immediately stop teaching and call your embassy/consulate until you get them back.
There are many signs of a bad school to work for in China; IMHO this practice is at the top of the list.
