A very sweet student confided in me immediately after losing her virginity. She was so excited and overwhelmed by the experience that she just had to share it with someone, and she chose me. I was touched by her trust in me.

Damn, wish losing mine had been that good! |

I assume your academic friend was Chinese. I also think that he probably made a call or two to colleagues in China and some "guanxi" was involved. This basically means that money will change hands if u accept his recommendation. I would much rather take the advice of a FT already at the institution you finally end up at. Also do your homework on the city and province. There are some very pretty cities but unfortunately the reality is, the majority are little more than garbage dumps.

| But how about some good stories? Successes in teaching? New unexpected friends? Personal growth from the challenges?... |
Anyone who's come and gone 3 times must have had some good experiences. There comes a time when you've gotta stop kidding yourself-the excuses just dont work anymore. Unfortunately, its the accumulation of all the "cultural" vices and the not so good experiences that finally get to you. A third world experience is one you'll never forget. It will challenge everything you hold of value, even your identity at times. Whether your experience is positive or negative is not always in your hands. If you only intend to stay a semester, u shouldnt get into too much trouble. Watch out for the women, most will do anything to escape their present lifestyle. An Aussie guy on the news tonight brought a wife back recently but she left after 3 days to see a friend and has not been seen since.

| I have a long and varied work experience, but teaching english will be new. I doubt I will have much guidance from the sound of things. I'm expecting to be thrown on my tukis at first but then... hope to enjoy myself. Is this possible? |
No offence, but if I read between the lines correctly, you'll be typical of the ESL scene in China. While there are any number of wanna-be "English teachers" more than willing to accept sub-standard pay, accommodation, food, air quality etc, the status quo will never change. "Travel the world and being paid for it" sounds good but the reality is far from the fairytale that a lot of people expect. If u go expecting the worst, u may just end up enjoying yourself.
Zhu ni hao yun!
