Tears are coursing down my face as I write this. The good old days of English Fast. Good monthly salary with free furnished accomodation. Paid on time and a month's holidays in the summer plus other days. Never more than 20 hours teaching a week, weekly workshops from a professional teacher trainer--I'll stop now and drown my sorrows.

DMB Please don't bring up English Fast again-it hurts too much.

dmb & Thrifty... Smile

naAAaa I wasn't there that long!! I Was there from September 1993 - until Sometime in 1997 (if my memory doesn't fail me...).
A good few years to say the least! Smile I was one of the last rats of the old Bakirkoy gang to leave the slowly sinking ship ... along with Darryl & Irish Neil...if you remember them...

Spent the whole time (then) in Bakirkoy and (like Thrifty) have fond memories of the old place....( drinks in the Yeşil anyone??)

Although I must admit that my first flat kitchen from E*****h f**t was a haven for roaches...They were soOo hard that they carried flick knives!!! No matter how much 'raid' we used...they would just lap it up and come back for more....It was a war we were destined to lose.... (sigh)

But they were indeed 'goOod' daysSss....

I too remember the good old days of English Fast - albeit in Izmir. In addition to thrifty's most pertinent comments I'd like to add that in its hey day we were often paid EARLY rather than just on time and the year we went American (was it '96?) I furnished a flat with TV, cooker, washing machine, hot water heater etc etc without feeling the pinch at all and still went out every night!

Those really were the days. Shame it didn't last. I bailed out in '98 just prior to the then manager doing a runner with all the takings inc. staff salaries!

And then the bottom feeders took over with their hourly pay and illegal workers.

When I was at English Fast, towards the end of the month the secretary would ring up the manager and tell her that the teachers had no money and we would get paid early.

There should be an ''ex-English Fast Association with meetings at old teacher hangouts.

The Sembol in Izmir (teachers' old haunt) is alive and well.
As It's summertime, why don't all you old Fasties from Istanbul (and maybe Ankara too) come and chill by the sea? We could reminisce better with some bottles of ice cold Efes, I'm sure!

Tavsan, I saw Darryl last month! I was lounging in the Yesil, when he walked in, wife in tow. He's retired and has decided to live in B'koy. BTW, did you know he'd managed to contract TB a while back? He's OK now, though.

Good old days in B'koy....
I seem to remember there was a drunken debate about which group of teachers would win a fight between English Farts, Interw.ank, ILM, Antic and Dil.do....I think the it was a toss-up between EF and Dilko.
Talking of fights, I remember that Interlang used not to have anything to do with other schools, because their DOS painted us all as drunken theiving drug addicts. One cold night in the Evim (formerly the Cicek), Marcus Powles got into a furious argument with a group of them, and shouted at one girl, 'If you was a bloke, I'd kick your f****in c**t in!'
Ah, happy days....

When I left the fast and joined a crappy outfit in Kadikoy the owner said that at one time all the teachers at English Fast Kadikoy were alcoholics and that he didn't like teachers who drank. What a *beep* he employed me and loads of others like me.

Thanks for the update concerning Darryl Golightly Smile I caught up with him on the phone just the other day infact....Yes the good old days in B'koy Smile (thrifty will be in tears if we continue bringing up `the fast too often!) I remember one hot August way back in 1994, we held a beer drinking competion in the Yesil Cafe....(This was between Dilko / English Fast / Antik teachers...) The winners???

English Fast of course! Smile The winning drinker had knocked back 26 beers in the hot August Sun!!!

The last person to leave the table was....MmmMmmM....I wonder if anyone who was around then can remember?? Needless to say the drinker in question had an interesting stagger home afterwards...(Luckily he wasn't teaching the next day!)

In 1996 B'koy English Fast was involved in a brawl at a restaurant somewhere on the asian side after one of the teachers (a little merry to say the least) tried to dance with a young lady from the next table. This wouldn't have been a problem normally....BUT....She had just gotten married and was having her wedding party in the restaurant. Her husband didn't really take to the teacher's advances and....punches followed...Chairs flew...tables toppled over...The police arrived...2 teachers were arrested and the rest is history....
