questions...I am currently in Korea and do not like it and wish to sojourn to Japan but most of the things I have examined cannot match the Korean package in terms of salary. I heard JET does this? Otherwise how do I earn at least 300,000 yen a month? Every offer I see is about 250,000, which given Japan's expenses is chicken feed, can't save there on that...so what should I consider in addition to JET, NOVA, Aeon? Any and all info and help will be appreciated...best, Deicide...

JET ALTs receive a salary of 300,000 yen/month before taxes and other deductions. Since most of the posts are in rural areas, rent is likely to be lower than in big cities, and some ALTs have even reported that their specific situation has afforded them with reduced or free rent.

Most conversation school (eikaiwa) jobs will pay 220,000 to 280,000 yen/month. In the past year or two, this has been nearer 220K than 280K, although until then the average pay was usually 250,000.

How do you make at least 300K?

1. JET ALT
2. Get a very rare eikaiwa position that offers more. Extremely rare.
3. Get an eikaiwa job and supplement with private lessons or PT work.
4. Get other work after you've been here a year. Other work might mean high school jobs.

I've lived in both Korea (Ulsan, actually) and Japan, and it is impossible to save as much money, while still having as much spending money, in Japan as you do in Korea with the same type of ESL job.

If you really want to come to Japan, then come. You can save money, you just won't save as much as you do in Korea right now (assuming that you do!).

Have you been to Japan yet? A taxi here starts at 650 yen, and goes up fast. The trains are more money (it costs what, 1100 won (130 yen or so) to go from one end of Pusan to the other on the train, while that same distance in Japan would be more like 750 yen). A pint of beer at Tombstone bar in Ulsan is 2500 won (300 yen) (Troy sold a pint for 3000 at Benchwarmers I think), while it is more like 1000 yen or so in Japan. An ice cream cone in Korea is 500 won, while it is more like 1200 won in Japan. A plate of Dok-bokki in Korea is 500 won, while I pay 500 YEN in Japan for the same thing. As you can tell, things can add up very quickly here.

Overall, I do like Japan more... but it's not by a huge margin. I really liked the buying more that I had in Korea. I could have a crazy night out in Korea, and I would spend less than $50 US. To do the same thing in Japan, it would easily be between $100-$200.

In order to save a decent coin in Japan, I've had to tame my life down quite a bit. I don't go out nearly as much. When I do, I'm a lot more careful about what I do.

So, again, if you're more interested in saving money, but don't like it in Ulsan, then move to Pusan, Seoul, Daegu, etc. Stay in Korea, but move to a larger city with more do to. If you have some fetish for Japan and you need to be here, or if you really do hate Korea, but want to stay in Asia and still make a decent coin, then come to Japan (or Taiwan, or find a good gig in China).

Glenski has listed basically all of your ESL options in Japan. I recommend number 3.
