I'm heading off to Shenzhen in a few weeks and have a few questions, would be great if someone could help me out! From what I can the see the place will be horribly hot and humid, have most places ac? Will it be easy to set up phones and net access?(No appartment with my job, getting a housing allowance instead) Is it easy to get english books there? How bout tv?
Whats the nightlife like? I won't be out every night of the week but would like to know that theres a few decent spots to hit at the weekend! What would be a nice area to live in?
Anything else I should consider before I head off?
Sorry for so many questions, have tried researching this but no joy.
Thanks!

not easy to find english books in shenzhen from what i can see, but its next to hong kong so easy enough to go there and get what you need. it is hot here, in fact, i often sweat just standing in one place. but most places have air con so you can get away from it. dont go out much here but around shekou you can find places to hang out and drink.

Good idea to use a local to find a place to live and help you get everything connected. Nanshan is a good area to live and work. Lots of foreigners nearby in Shekou (pron. sherkco) which is part of Nanshan. I've lived here for 1 1/2 years and now moving from the center of the city (east of Nanshan) to Nanshan.
You can, with the aid of a Chinese person, find all the books you will need
in Book City (Chinese is pron. shoe chung) which is in Nanshan and Luohu and another big store next to the Ke Xue Guan (ker shoer gwarn) subway station (deetiair jan).
Get a subway card, (dee tiair car) about 100RMB which has 70 RMB worth of travel on it.
But if you have special needs for books, yes you can get them in HK, send me an e-mail and I will send you the names and addresses of the bookstores.
HK is the best place to buy clothes, cameras, computers, mobiles etc. as it is cheaper and higher quality at Mongkok which is part of Kowloon, Tsim Tsa Shiu is the center of Kowloon and is expensive but there's lots of backpackers there and bars etc. and cheap accommodations. It's also the palce to go to get your Visa if you don't get a Working Visa for China; 2 hour turn around if you know where to go, ask me.
If you have a home credit card you can get stuff (books) sent to you from HK via the net, and they'll send it by courier too.
Best way to go to HK is through the Huang Gang Kou An, (that's hwong gung co an). Contact me and I will give you a detailed explanation.
Getting around Shenzhen can be difficult. Best idea is to get a map, but the map is pretty bad and not to scale but it gives you the names and locations of the main areas and roads.
Once you get to know the buses and subway Shenzhen is easy to get around, and you can bargain with Taxi drivers after 11 PM. There are also loads of illegal taxis here and you can get good deals with them too, but stick to the more new cars at first.
There is an info number you can call from a mobile to get bus info, 160, but you have to have a good level of Chinese to use it, so you can call me if you are stuck.
Shekou is the place to meet up with foreigners in the bars there and get your home foods etc. There's bars and discos all over Shenzhen and you find out about all that, and most all else on www.shenzhenparty.com
Many people, have helped me, mostly Chinese, so I am very happy to help newbies here. I have mainly Chinese friends here, but there are pitfalls in getting to know locals, so you have to be cautious.
You can contact me at [email protected]. I am Australian, been in China 4 years. Call me 81174004 local mobile. I work in Nanshan Monday to Friday.

STOP!! HOLD IT!! WAIT A MOMENT!! I was in shen zhen twice and it was the worst experience in China I ever had. Go anywhere but Shenzhen. I spent a year in Chonqing, and nanning but shenzhen was terrible. Shekou sukks, and everything else is fake, you never feel at home here and the people are vwery unfriendly. Take my advice, and go to another city.

I've been in Shenzhen for three years. The people aren't particularly friendly, but the money is better than most other cities. Pollution isn't bad, and the city is near Hong Kong and Macao. Choose your poison. I'm sure there are nicer cities in China, though.

you've only been in shenzhen twice. either trolling or just didnt have any idea where to go while you were here. shenzhen is one of the cleanest and quietest cities (if not THE cleanest and quietes) i've been to in china. been here most of the summer. the housing projects across the street from where i'm staying make you think you're almost back home, keep off the grass signs, pretty clean, organized, very quiet..... thats out near qianhai lu and taoyuan lu area.
