...Osaka station, (bit of a newbie to Osaka) trying to figure out how to get back to the small village in the mountains when Im living at the moment ... when a (Japanese) guy asks me where Im headed.

I explain in my fluent (pigeon) Japanese (-I so need to study ..) and he tries to figure out the ticket machine. He asks a nearby woman who is buying her own tickets and she tells/helps him. She ends up helping me buy the ticket and then, as it happens, she is heading to the same station as me. So she shows me which train to catch to make the shink connection etc.

- Ofcourse I could have figured it all out, but when people offer to help, isnt it rude to turn it down !!?

And, after all that as we parted ways at the last station, and I was thanking her profusely for her help, - she apologised for her `bad English` !!! - If I ever get to speak Japanese as well as she could speak English, Id be one happy sensei.

To the next journey ...

I am trying to learn japanese and it said (it is an audio learning program) that in japan it is custom to downplay your abilities. That is so different from the U.S..lol. Here you are to go on and on about how good you are.
Makes me happy that you found someone to help you...stories about friendly people make me look forward to come to Japan. Very Happy
