generally those who work at institutes arent REAL teachers, although over years of teaching they can call themselves teachers to some degree at least. but i too dont understand why you 'thrifty' cant come clean on your school. if you have something to say about it you should at least have the courage to come out, so to speak. of course we all know what school you supposedly work for. but if you work for them i cant understand why you hate them so much. it's your choice to work there. obviously it is the best job you can get or else youd work somewhere else where youd perhaps be happier. fill us in as to why you must be SOOO trapped there!

scb222:

You must be the only poster on this forum who even vaguely believes that I work for the school that cannot be named.

I do not, have never and will never work for that bottom feeder. Why the hell would I, when I have got good qualifications and experience?

All I know about that place I have picked up from here, but that doesn't stop me from despising that place for dragging down EFL in Istanbul.

sorry for thinking you must be working there. you have such strong feelings for the place, it was only natural to think that you had at least worked there at some point.

as for the quality of esl in istanbul, its been at the bottom of the heap for ages, ET didnt have anything to do with that, it's all the fault of the turk govt and their stupid rules for not making esl teachers legal in their country, for not aspiring to higher standards, for not allowing better conditions to prevail for REAL teachers who would then hence fill the market. instead the crappy salaries and long hours with little reward and thanks doesnt encourage real and good teachers to come to turkey. therefore the country is full of backpacker teachers. i really think it's a bit harsh to blame a business, let's face it all institutes are businesses first.

You have it the wrong way round. The bottom feeders blame the work permit system and use it to avoid getting their teachers' work permits. They could get them for all their teacher but to save money they employ illegals.

Do you think if they offered real wages and conditions they would be stuck with backpackers? Things were much better before the crime started the downward slide.

With those qualifications and experience, why do you still not have a career?

And with all that English-teaching experience, an MSc, and a DELTA, why can't you make your verbs parallel? Wink

so finally he admits the truth that most of us already knew. now get off the rant.

Now my mini rant. First, you are insulting the teachers who work at the language schools. They do not have to work there and in fact many choose to work there. They are not backpackers, as they have to meet our criteria. Of course some of them may carry backpacks, now that I think of it, but I think most carry shoulder bags....

of course some of the schools are questionable, but ET is not one of them, in spite of its flaws (and who works for a perfect school anywhere in the world?) As to the quality of EFL in istanbul, ET in fact raised the bar for language teaching and continues to do so, within limits. We do not blame the work permit system for teachers' status, but the complexity of the Turkish bureaucracy certainly does not make things easy, and that includes the bureaucracy within companies (and not only language schools) and the government. I have to work with both and it is very frustrating. However, I have learned which battles to fight, which is one reason I rarely post here anymore-- why waste my time? In general I find this forum has become rather dreary since the return of the multinamed poster.

OK, end of rant.

So now the truth is out, indeed.
I have little knowledge about the ET language school chain, so make no comment on the quality of the teachers/management etc.
But I do find it interesting that after spending the last couple of years putting great effort into trying to convince the forum readers that he actually worked at ET and after trying to cultivate the impression that what he spoke was from first hand knowledge of working there, suddenly 'Thrifty' confesses he has never ever worked there.
He has clearly proven himself to be a liar.

Molly, i'm afraid I need to disagree with you here.
I'll explain. I'm sure others will agree with me that early to mid 90s the Fast did offer the best package. (accom., paid holidays blah blah blah)

After the demise of Nazif bey then EC, interlang and IH offered pretty much the same packages. Indeed the owners of these schools used to have regular meetings. they price fixed the fees for students and the salaries/conditions of teachers. This is not hearsay,I was involved in some of these meetings.

Anyway about 5 years ago I left the language school thing, left Turkey and returned 2 years ago to Turkey to find a very different picture.

Interlang taken over, no more IH and a very much reduced EC. What happened?

I am in no way saying anything negative about ET. I have no present knowledge of it, but based on my dealings with ET 5 years ago and conversations with the few people I know who work in any language school nowadays. The glory days of the language school in Turkey was almost a decade ago. The best deals now In Turkey are with private unis and K12.Agreed?
