Denby.....*brrrrr*....don't mention that total tosspot's name, or his stripy, Noel-Edmonds style jumper that was welded to him! I know about the gossip re his attempted entry into the world of porn photos.....after he was ejected from the country, he returned to Ist, and unfortunately appeared in the Yesil in Bakirkoy. Unfortunately for him, that is: I put the word round the schools to make sure he never, ever, worked anywhere. An unprofessional, deeply unpleasant little man.
Thrifty, were you working with Guy during his year-long sojourn In Istanbul? I can't remember the name of the school, but it was just off Taksim Square. If so, you must also know another former flatmate of mine, Peter 'Sweetie Petie' Mitchell. |

| Quite probably, that and the Vivache round the back of the Greek church. Would probably have been accompanied by Colin - don't know his surname, but he was lanky with receding blond hair and round glasses. |

| On the subject of G.E he put the word around that he was a dos during his tenure at Istanbul, can you confirm that or was it another of those little embellishments that he seems to have been well known for ? |

| No, he was DOS at the place he worked at. That was his title, at least. |

Yes I worked with GE when he came to Ist to make his fortune. He had the title of DOS for one year at Akademi Istanbul as he was the only teacher bar one who stayed on for a second year. The other mad South African became DOS of the second branch of the school which was near Bosphorous electicity company on the other side of Taksim square.
You have really opened a can of worms and I don't know where to start of if I will be banned from the forum for some of what I know. |

| Guy Elders. His name rings a bell. His CV has passed across my desk or something. The man is either a legend ...or he worked at E Fast. |
He only worked 3 years in Ist. 2 at Akademi and 1 year at Bilgi. |

Denby was the only teacher sacked from Cinar, apparently on the grouonds of 'this man is - what do you guys say? - a total w4nker'. Which he was. On the night he left, the story has it that he wrote, IN BLOOD, on the walls of his shared accommodation, 'I know where you all live. Learn to sleep with one eye open'. |

| sounds like a cracking flatmate :0). How do you avoid sharing with potential psycho's? Is it possible to afford non-shared accomodation on a TEFL wage in Istanbul? |

The Denby scandal made front-page news as I recall. He and another teacher from a private lise were caught taking "Art" photos of university girls. Caught because they were stupid enough to bring film to a local developing shop. The owner of the shop, no art lover, I presume, contacted the authorities and they were immediately asked to leave the country.
No tears were shed at his leaving and the bon voyage party was not well-attended. |

Good question. What is the housing allowance in Istanbul nowadays? Somebody told me that it, like the guaranteed minimum hours, was a perk that was being phased out? Could that true? If so, I dont see how you could possibly make it harder for a new teacher coming to this country.
As far as avoiding having a psycho flatmate... good luck. Actually true psychos are, thankfully, rare, but flatmates with annoying habits, inconsiderate behaviour and downright rudeness are all too common. I would tell you that the best thing to do is to agree on the rules together at the very ( VERY) first day. If this doesnt work then there isnt much you can do about it except maybe this: dont accept a school manager saying, "You two will simply have to work it out between yourselves."
It is nearly impossible to function at work if your home is a battlefield. Any manager worth his salt will make some honest attempt to sort things out for you if there is a problem. |

yep, there are some real nutjobs out there - and some strangely amusing ones too. I lived next door to 'Whispering Dave' when I was in Kadikoy. He looked like Philip Larkin, and wafted round the flat in a red silk kimono-type thing and carpet slippers. His best friend was an empty bottle of Efes, with which he could be heard talking at strange times of the night. Generally mild-tempered and quiet by nature, this could all be spoiled by pouring booze into him, after which he'd become a raving bloody maniac.
At the time, I was sharing with Eric 'Hff Hfff' Grove and a complete 4rse called Mike Worris. Fortunately, I was moved to Bakirkoy just before I killed the pair of them, and susequently had a brilliant time sharing with Martin Heslop and Graham Elton. |

Sounds like you guys in the" bull " really know how to have a good time .But know what ?I don't envy you one bit .I had to share a place when I first started I was the the last one in and all the others (3 of them ) were younger just snot rags really so I laid it on the line that I was taking over and a new sheriff was in town, the first night I got pissed off
and physically threw 2 of them out followed by their personal belongings ,they went and complained to the manager (mistake) they were drunk so he told them they were fired unless they cleaned up their act . So that formula has worked ever since ,works on the kids too show them whos boss ,take no crap ,or prisoners .Btw Thrifty ,thanks for the pm ,don't worry anything you pass on to me will NOT be reproduced on this forum . |
