Hi, all! I'm leaving for TEFL Int'l or SIT in El INVU in 2 weeks but I plan to find work and teach in San Jose or Heredia once I'm certified. Will I be able to rent a room/apt with internet availability so I can bring my laptop? Or is briging my laptop a waste? I would really like to be able to IM/email friends while at my living space instead of going to an internet cafe every time. Thanks, all you veterans out there!
Robin
(BTW, would getting a room/apt with internet cost me substantially more money??) |

yes, internet in the house that does not have a hook up already would cost more. i only know of one hostel/rooming house in Heredia that provides a computer free internet service.
Carrying a laptop around is dangerous, electronics here are expensive. and they seem to be what the thieves go after, keeping it in your room should be okay.
Internet cafes usually charge between 250 col and 350 per hour (.50cents?) really cheap compared to hook up.
good luck

What I have done in a similar situation is become friends with the neighbourhood internet cafe owner and set up my laptop so I can plug it in at his cafe. At least all my email is on my computer and I can compose any long stuff at home and quickly download it. It should also be possible to negotiate a better rate. |

Good suggestion, but youre still carrying around the laptop. I would suggest that if you do this that you carry it, not in a visibly obvious laptop carry bag but in a plastic grocery bag or some kind of disguise.
good luck,
cheers

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I'm going to try to find an apt with wireless internet available somewhere in/around San Jose...someone told me it wouldn't be that difficult... Let me know if I'm harboring false hope! |

Wireless internet? Good luck finding that.
Internet, maybe even CABLE internet ... won't be hard, just pricey.
Wireless? That might be trickier. |

About how much more would I expect to pay for an internet connection?? Are most connections just phone-line connections and really slow? I appreciate the infrormation, by the way.. |

I found wireless internet at several places I was looking at around the SJ area, and the house I decided on has it. Maybe it is just where you look? But I have had no problems finding places with internet, some even wireless. Good luck- |
