Hello all !
Has anyone ever had any positive dealings with this outfit ? I have applied for jobs through them on two occasions, in May 2006 and May 2004. On both occasions, I attached copies of my qualifications, CV, etc; but all I ever got back from them were the auto-acknowledgement responses !
I have had several years teaching experience and hold two Masters' degrees - inc. one in Applied Linguistics.Maybe they specialise in applications from newbies and think that I am over-qualified and experienced ! Also, because I am over 40 and am not a Nth American could be factors in fobbing me off. The fact that the last time I used their services, I was applying for jobs in Shanghai - maybe, they were inundated with applications and simply couldn't handle them all ! Maybe, they are simply incompetent.
I hope that it is not some scam involved with "indentity theft", through passing on the copies of my documents to desperate, unqualified "teachers".
Anyway, I have given up on Shanghai, and have found a reasonably well-paid uni job in Sichuan. Also, I got this job through networking. My days with dealing with recruiters are over !

Peter,
Angelina's is an extremely reputable and well-established recruiter. They have always assisted me and they have assisted others on this Board. They have an extremely close relationship with the Chinese Government and are privy to most of the job openings in China.
Next, they take Americans, English-speaking Canadians, British, Australians and New Zealanders in that order. I have been told that directly. They operate strictly by the SAFEA rules in terms of native speakers so if you do not come from one of the scheduled countries, indeed you have a problem.

Not that I agree or disagree with any of your words above, but i've always wondered about "ANGELINA"...well and her .... recruiting agency  ... she's got quite a few postings on China Job Boards .... that must cost her...... the question is whether she is "helpful" and "resourceful" or not  Once (a long time ago), i applied through her agency...and now i've still been recieving into my email box some "opportunities" that are available through her lovely services (that i've never used)

I know that Dave's charges for their ad service..but do the other boards....
I have dealt with this agency and have found them to be reasonable...in their actions...they even contact me on Messenger..with information and have some pretty sharp folks working for them. |

I would recommend a good soap called "Eau de Strine No. 69" to clean your nose and other areas from which odors may emanate.

Such an aggressive "HunanLittleForeignGuy"....but he is a loyal citizen of USAnia, upholding family values, correct accents, and the USAnian way!! A great pity his "elite university" education was sadly wasted! |

I had one experience with them last fall when I signed a contract with a school in Qingdao . The teacher I replaced bolted . The students were great at the school my FAQ was the worst.
The problem with these recruiters sometimes is that they enable an employer to exploit you . When the job is over and it is time to pay the big salary to the teacher they are not there . Good schools don't use recruiters .
I was located in Beijing at the time I signed a contract with them and the funny thing was that I was living in the neighborhood ,where
their office is located in . Now I just wanted to jump on my bike and deliver the contract in person . This was not OK with them . When I called them to complain about bad treatment , they replied that they didn't know the school very well and it was a first time experience with them also . |

Brian, sorry to hear you had those kinds of problems but uneven representation is not unusual for agencies of this kind..they are selling a product and if one product is more marketable than they will go with the one that is going to generate the most interest.
I to live in Beijing and never had this agency refuse a visit or not be up front with a situation, true they have little more than to put you in touch and find out the results of an interview..but they are not personal agents and will not stay by your side for the whole employment. Perhaps they should, but so far in China, I have no one to accept responsibility for a deal after it is done.
Good schools often have to use requiters to fill staff vacancies, and to scavenger workers from other work units , much the same way it is done in the West.
Remember there is no one set outcome and you can never go on anyone else's experience but rather use the information to make your Union with a company successful. Just because a Foreign teacher did not have a successful tenure at one school does not mean you will not or vise a versa..and an agency is the same...the trick is to take what you read and apply it to your situation.
If I were you i would ask for a messenger contact so that they can get to you quickly, make sure they have up to date information and keep in touch so that they know you are active and available. Most important is to keep in touch..do what marketers do all over..Call, drop, Call..that is call first about a position drop the CV and then call back..get aggressive with both schools and agencies... |
