In Thailand, it is important to remember cultural differences between the west and Thailand. For example: harmony is more important than honesty, so people will often lie rather than give bad news; never telling students they are wrong; always keeping seniority in mind; NEVER saying a bad word about the king; not putting things on the floor, etc. Are there similar such cultural aspects to remember when working with Taiwanese? |

Good of you to ask, Drew. Cultural sensitivity can take you far. The basic principle is the same as in Thailand, and it looks like you know the rules. The gentle art of saving face in Taiwan has many aspects: tact works better than honesty, humility works better than assertiveness and finding someone you trust to check with is always a good idea. When you first arrive, asking for etiquette pointers is a great way to bond with the Taiwanese, although they might be too polite to point out your faux pas! Basically, when someone compliments you on your Mandarin, that's usually a sign that you've made a mistake. Welcome to this side of the looking-glass, bro. |
