In short, if you treat your professionals like professionals, they will respond in the appropriate manner. If you believe that they're factory fodder, you'll get labourers - and disillusioned ones at that!.

Indeed. Or--if you pay peanuts you get monkeys, although up until a couple of years ago the salary was pretty good, especially from the standpoint of an English teacher. It is still good if you have capped out on the scale, which I did starting in my seventh year. I doubt there will ever be a shortage of English teachers for any length of time. Despite no increments, for someone who's been backpacking in the TEFL circuit around Asia for the past ten years, the package still looks pretty enticing.

Naturally you are bored to tears right now, but once classes start, you will find that there is plenty to do for most of the time you are there, and you do have access to a computer and the internet, don't you?

Probably most of my time before classes (prep is really minimal--you can go all out but then the return on the investment is much the same...those who claim otherwise I suspect are internally driven with personal issues that don't really reflect the external reality, so to speak) is taken up wasting time on the internet.

I found it impossible to do ANYTHING in their office systems which tend to be open plan with constant traffic and ringing phones and people talking and students wandering in and out at will.

Too true, too true. It's impossible to be productive. The set-up militates against it.

And don't forget all those *#$% meetings...

VS

(BTW, have you ever tried the included 'quote' system? Once I figured it out, it works pretty well - better than cut/paste/adj font...)
