I have received contact from Yunnan University of Trade and Finance, and they have asked me to send them copies of my passport, my highest degree, and my TESOL degree. Is this normal and/or acceptable? Also, has anyone heard of this University?-- I got their information off of www.chinatefl.com. Any comments would be appreciated. |

This is completely normal. All schools will ask for this stuff before they hire you. They will also need it to process your paperwork, although asking for it early on is generally in order to make sure you're legit before they make a decision.
I live in Kunming, and the university you mention is legit, although they probably offer a really pitiful salary. It isn't one of the more prestegious schools in the province. |

The uni is real enough but that does not mean they are authorized to hire foreigners.
Ask them for their SAFEA registration number. |

A lot of good that would do someone nowhere near China. The employer can just make up some fake number and who'd know?
If the university can get the OP a Visa Notice, an Invitation Letter and a Work Permit, they are legit.

They need to see your passport so when the local authorities can issue you the paperwork, they'd know what name and passport number to put on the paper. Also, they need to see if you are white. They need to see your degrees so they can show the authorities that you sare qualified. |

They're authorized to hire foreigners.
All of the universities in Kunming are, in fact. I don't think government run universities have much trouble procuring this authorization. |
