This is something I'm not sure about. I tried to ask about this on another thread but got no response, so I decided to post my own. How are degrees done by distance received in Hong Kong. I know that in some countries such as Korea or Japan they are fine, but I read that in Taiwan that's not the case. What about in Hong Kong? If they are not accepted, is this overall, or does it the university it was obtained from make a difference? And furthermore, how would they know? I am under the impression that Universities here (Australia) do not put this information on the degree. Information (with sources) would be most appreciated.

There are mant recognised distance Degrees offered in HK.

Leister, Coventry, etc
The list is huge.

The points to consider though are; how much tutorial support is offered? What is the cost when compared with a part time degree through a local institute.

I did have a search engine that listed all locally approved courses in HK, alas I have misplaced it. I will post a link as soon as I find it.

I was thinking of doing MA (Applied Linguistics) through University of New England. Mainly because as an Australian citizen I don't have to pay upfront fees. And it's a well recognized uni for distance learning. Well here at least. How would a degree from here be received?

Just fine, don't worry. I too have a distance degree and I've had absolutely no problem. On the contrary, employers are often impressed to know that I juggled studying a Degree and teaching together. Smile

I think the origin of the degree is not too important in Hong Kong.

I started studying MA Applied linguistics with UTS - Sydney and then changed to distance mode when I moved to China.
I have a BA - distance mode from UNE - Armidale.
The government here in HK have accepted my qualifications.

PS - UNE is good and well organized with distance learning. But UTS is well known for TESOL and Linguistics courses.

I'm thinking of getting a Master degree via distance learning at Manchester University next Sept. But I 'd like to get the advice of anyone who can give me a hand about this matter specially from anyone who has done it or is doing it now.

Also i'd like to know if I can get a good job although I am not native

This may be a little off-topic, but how are the degrees regarded when you return home or when you apply for jobs at home?

I graduated from UNE last year with my MA in Applied Linguistics. I have had no problems with the degree being accepted. I am in Korea, but have recently started applying to other countries, and I am receiving some positive responses. I have heard nothing negative about my degree. UNE is also recognized by a large distance education group in the U.S. That happened last year, and it means that U.S. citizens can apply for funding. That adds a lot of credibility to the degree.

The UNE program is quite good. It was still experiencing some "growing pains" when I was a student, but I found things improvws every term. My biggest complaint was professors often off going off on guest lecture tours, leaving student assistants in charge. That happened in two of my courses, and I felt that I was "robbed" of the professor's expertise. That's just my opinion, but something you should be aware of.

Good Luck!
